Hey whats up siccness. I've been doin my rapping thing for a while now, an I've been thinking for a long time about having my own studio set up at my house. A little dream of mine that I'm tryin to make happen. Im planning on eventually getting enough practice on all the equipment needed to produce my own tracks... Everything from making the beat, to rapping the lyrics, to recording the vocals...

It was my birthday on the 2nd and since my dad's into music, an knows how much I am as well, he gave me some of his equipment less than a year old, still in box, perfect condition...
I came up on a Tascam DP-01FX Digital 8-track mixer:
http://www.tascam.com/Products/dp01fx.html
And a Global Audio GXL2200 Condenser Microphone with a nice mount, stand an pop filter:
http://www.musiciansnews.com/singing/59/global_audio_gxl2200_condenser_microphone_wit.shtml

Now first things first... Im gonna read this manual an get down the basics of recording, cutting, mixing an all that... Im planning on getting a 'fast USB 2.0' cord to transfer wav. files to my computer... I dont know what program I should get for my computer... Protools is the most common used, but to start out, I dunno which is best, or if its even nessesary since there's all those settings on the actual mixer...

Once I get a handle on this equipment and record some clean mixes I'm plannin on spendin some more money to invest in a drum machine an keyboard so I can really get down yadig... I got alot of talent flowin thru my veins, I can feel it. I've always seen things from a producer stand point as well as the artist so I think I can do good with this...

Any good tips you can share with me to help get me off the ground?
Or anything else I need to make this set-up really legit?

I know I need to soundproof my room for this to happen... My popz got recording foam all over the place at his crib... I dont know what kind it is or anything like that... I jus know its recording foam, it goes on the walls, an it soaks up sound LOL

Thanks in advance to anyone who chooses to reply in anyway helpful :)

Alright so day 2...
I read thru most of the manual, got it all set-up..an there's a major problem:hurt:
I converted a few beats to Wav. format because thats all the Tascam recognises, and I connected it thru USB to my computer, copied the files over to the 'Wave' section of the Tascam's Hard-drive, an closed the USB connection.
Now I go back to the actual mixer to try to load up the sounds, click 'Menu', click on 'Wave', an click 'Import Track'.... IMPORT FILE NOT FOUND???

The file should be there, Im doing everything right. I've even opened the USB connection back up and double checked that the files were actually present in the 'Wave' folder... I dont know what to do... Does anyone have any experiance with these an maybe have some advice to getting it working?
Without the Import feature working its pretty much impossible to record anything more than an accapella haha

I'm interested in hearing what kind of quality your getting off that Tascam. I was never into Digital Recorders, still not, but interested in hearing the quality output.

Anyways, good luck.

its soundin pretty good so far, if i had a booth, of even a little bit of soundproofing it'd be much better though... Im thinking about puttin my mic in my closet. Seems like all the clothes around it would help soak up the excess sound for now.. Im deff. still learning tho, havent even gotten into any of the effects yet

I use the closet in the room where I have my setup, cop some Auralex Acoustics from your local equipment store and add some sound dampening/insulation, you don't have to put it everywhere, space it out a bit, leave gaps, set up your mic stand appropriately, you'll be good to go.

Yeah I'm familiar with the Roland digital recorders they seem to be the most popular and expensive, never heard any quality from them though.

About the closet for a open booth, you really don't need to, you could just put some foam in a corner of the room and set up the mic and stand in the corner about a 2 feet from the edge and use that, I only use the closet to save space! Plus I got a dog so I like to keep her away from the wires and equipment, keeps your shit out of the way.

Peace

fosho mayne, thanks for the advice... yeah I got dogs too, an a puppy im really worried about knockin over my mic an shit, that was another reason for me thinking the closet was my best bet..
I have a whole studio work station that I need to set up.. its like a big desk that I can put my computer on, along with my mixer, an speakers... shit should save alot of space and look better too
