WE MAY BE THE UNHEALTHIEST NATION IN THE WORLD

40 Percent in U.S. Use Prescription Drugs

Dec 2, 11:03 AM (ET)

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID

WASHINGTON (AP) - More than 40 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug and one-in-six takes at least three, the government reported Thursday.

"Americans are taking medicines that lower cholesterol and reduce the threat of heart disease, that help lift people out of debilitating depressions, and that keep diabetes in check," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said in a statement.

The annual report on Americans' health found that just over 44 percent of all Americans take at least one prescription drug, and 16.5 percent take at least three.

Those rates were up from 39 percent and 12 percent between 1988 and 1994, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

The report, "Health, United States 2004," presents the latest data collected by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics and dozens of other Federal health agencies, academic and professional health associations, and international health organizations.

Americans' life expectancy increased to 77.3 years in 2002, a record. And deaths from heart disease, cancer and stroke - the nation's three leading killers - are all down 1 percent to 3 percent, the analysis said.

The study also found that spending on health climbed 9.3 percent in 2002 to $1.6 trillion.

Prescription drugs, which make up about one-tenth of the total medical bill, were the fastest growing expenditure. The price of drugs rose 5 percent, but wider use of medicines pushed total expenditures up 15.3 percent in 2002. Drug expenditures have risen at least 15 percent every year since 1998.

The report said prescription drug use was increasing among people of all ages, and use increases with age.

Nearly half of all women were taking prescription drugs - 49 percent - compared to 39 percent of men.

Usage peaked at 84 percent for people aged 65 and over, with the top rate at 89 percent for black women over 65.

Even for people under age 18, however, nearly one-fourth - 24.1 percent - were taking at least one prescription medication. The rate rose to 34.7 percent between age 18 and 44; for those ages 45 to 64, it was 62.1 percent.

LMAO....

I always wondered just how many Americans are on drugs.
I knew the number was up there but it's cool to get a clearer picture.

We have the most over weight drug abusers in the world....
Might as well give old Lady Liberty a make over, give her an extra 60 lbs, a paranoid look in her face, and a crack pipe instead of a torch!

^GOOD FUCKING POINT^

When I was in 10th grade the newspaper did a survey and 85% of my class smoked weed.

Personally, I am not into prescription drugs, even when the doctor tells me to take some shit. I feel really wrong about taking shit like that. Granted, I slam a handful of Advil over the weekend, but other than that, Vitaiman C is all I fuck with.

Ya'll ever really listen to the "side affects" of some of these drugs, like some say you might expierence "tremor", man what the fuck? I have been prescribed medecine from the DOC before but only once have I taken it "tetracycline(sp)".

Does the doctor ever prescribe Amoxicillin or Augmentin to you? If not, take it when they do prescribe it to you. Say you have Strep throat...are you going to take the antibiotics or are you going to take a chance and not? If you don't, it can result in Rheumatic Fever and even death. Would you die for strep? Just curious.

What are these studies based on? Are they based on blood thinners? Anti-Depressants? Heart medication? Antibiotics? If you ask anybody in this country on any given day, a shitload of people will be on Prescription medication. Shit, in just 4 weeks (straight) I was on Amoxicillan, Augmentin, Codeine, Vicodin, and Steroids for the swelling in my throat caused by tonsilitis. I mean, on any given day, half of the country could be on medication because of some illness that suddenly came about.

i think that all drugs should be legalized, think about how overcrowded the prisons are w junkies and dope dealers...some dealers in there longer than violent offenders, which makes no sense at all...although there are certain drugs like PCP, maybe some others im not a drug expert, that should be illegal, we dont want anybody w anger management and personal issues to turn into the incredible hulk and go on a rampage by taking some tranquilizers...but my stance is, if you legalize drugs and we dont spend money on putting these ppl in jails, rehabs, etc etc, think of all the money wed be saving...if someone wants to fill up w junk, let them be, its their perogative.

The reason so many people are prescribed drugs is because things like being sad, hyper, or my favorite... being shy (social anxiety, lol @ who decided this was a mental illness), are all now considered treatable mental disorders. (Which in my opinion is some straight up bullshit)

People don't realize that drugs for such "mental disorders" are actually doing more harm than good. Drug companies don't give a fuck, they influence doctors to the point that doctors are taught that only pills can treat an illness.

Manic Depression (being sad without reason) can usually be treated with proper diet and nutrition and vigorous exercise, anyone who takes pills for this has been fooled.

I really don't consider ADD and ADHD a disorder, it's just working on-the-go find-a-solution-fast parents who like to give thier kids amphetamines to help them concentrate and calm down. (drugs used to treat ADD can be very harmful with long term use).

And social anxiety. I used to be a VERY shy kid, this is not a disorder.
