Do people not understand how soundscan works? Individual sales dont directly lead to the number that is displayed. The number of units sold is the amount of cds that the distrubter sold to stores. So say warner sold 100k to tower/rasputins/warehouse/streetshow/amazon/cduniverse blah blah then the soundscan number would be 100k because thats how many were sold to the stores. So you can go buy 10 copies of the cd (leave them sealed), soon as the stores stock runs out they have to order more from the distrubter, you can then go return all 10 of those copies and they will still count towards the scan number.

Actually, Soundscan numbers are based on units actually sold to customers, not shipped to stores.

RIAA numbers are based on units shipped.
