A little while ago I bought a cheap car (while my other was being prepped to pass smog) to get me to work and back. It drove fine for a while until It had trouble starting. Sometimes I would turn the key and nothing happens, So I figured it was the battery. So I went and bought a new one and it fired right up. Heres the thing, and this is the opinion of myself and others that have seen it - something in my car is draining the power from the battery cutting it's life to less than a month. We took the new battery I got and brought it back (perhaphs I got the wrong one) and the new one fired the bucket right up again. About a week later the battery was dead and it has been sitting in my driveway ever since. I'm getting to the point where I need some extra cash but I can't sell this thing not running.

My Question: What is it in a car that would drain the battery like this, and if this isn't the problem, what might cause my car to have no power after a brand new battery is put in?

My room-mates dad told us it might be the alternator draining the battery. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Car is an 1989 Toyota Camry

your alternator is dead, get a new one...im almost positive that it, its not holding the charge from the battery so your draining the battery directly and its not recharging...therefor your cars battery is dead when you park it and shut it off..theres a easy way to test it someon told me...hold on.

just drive up to auto zone or a place like that and they will test your alternator for you and tell you if its going bad or not...they do that shit for free because they want your business.....you can buy a rebuilt alternator from them or a junk yard and then turn your bad one in for core value (money off the new one)...sounds like the alternator is going bad like ole boy said

Besides the alternator it could also be a "parasitic" drain which is what I had. 6 new batterries in 2 months. What you do is go to an auto store, buy a test light for like under $5, and you put it between the negative cable and the battery where it the neg. connects. If its on that means theres something draining your battery and you start pulling fuses one by one and the one that goes out is the one that was causing the problems. When you test for this make sure your doors are closed so no dome lights or any thing is on.
