An NBA referee allegedly bet on basketball games, including ones he was officiating, the New York Post first reported Friday.
One official close to the federal investigation told WNBC of New York that investigators are looking into whether the ref made calls that affected the point spread. But there is no hard evidence at this time, according to WNBC.
The FBI is investigating the ref, who allegedly made bets during the last two seasons, as part of a larger probe in organized crime, according to the Post report. Charges could come down next week, according to WNBC.
"These are dangerous people [the referee] was involved with," a source told the Post.
One source told the Post that the ref, whose name has been withheld, was able to win in the "double digits."
NBA commissioner David Stern is aware of the investigation, according to the Post.
The Post's sources said that the ref had a gambling problem and slipped into debt, falling prey to bookies and the mob. According to WNBC, the referee may have owed around $50,000.
"That's how he got himself into this predicament," a source told the Post.
