As an engineer / producer one thing really bugs me...why is it that a rapper can rap about all the money he has, bottles he pops, drugs he sells, and cars he drives, but they can't or chose not to spend money on real production and studios?

I'm tired of cats always looking for a freebie or handout, but then get super offended if someone asks them to do something for free. They act like they are supposed to be superstars, but can't swing $50, 60 bucks an hour for a real studio or a few hundred for a beat.

What's up with that?

I know I don't post a lot on this forum, but it seems to have the most traffic from producers and rappers so I thought I would air this here.

your statement doesn't make sense. the fact that someone doesn't have a name doesn't change the quality of their work. at least with beats you can hear it before you buy it, so if it's wack it's wack and just b/c a producer has a name doesn't make a track tight.

it's called FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT. lord knows almost all of these rappers are broke, they just act like they're rich. most of these dudes have never even seen more than $10k at one time.

Off top I always ask how much a "producer" charges b4 I even walk in to their lab. Just so I know what I'm getting in to becuase bottom line MONEY TALKS. If a dude is weak 9 time outta 10 I don't ask about pricing but they always bring up how much they charge for a track/time in the studio.. Usually I fuck wit the producers that are up and coming just want dudes to spit on their beats and that's who I mess with. And the dudes who charge per hour if they cool I fuck wit them too I don't mind paying for a hot beat.

I produce and make good quality shit. Since I moved to the bay this pass january I have found out most rap cats out hear dont wont to spend shit. Superstar are not they wont it for free. I always hear this line all the time your nobody I can help you get your name out there. Or why should I pay you this when I get beats from traxamillion for a 100 bucks. This is an art if people dont know. One thats dying at that because of shit like this and soulja boy lol. The equipment wasnt free so why should the beat be.

You sooooooo right...........lol but join the club.....and good luck. My advice: Right now, everybody, I mean everybody is BROKE. It's almost a form of the "new depression". The whole world is fucked up moneywise....What you need to do is, do as many beats as you can for as many artists as you can or who that you feel are worthy of your tracks and get your name BUZZIN out there in the streets real real real tuff like. Once you are the "HOT PRODUCER" that is on everyones shit, then people will want you because you are the "HOT PRODUCER" and will most likely pay what you are negotiating with them. And never outprice yourself and scare potential artists away...Remember alot of people are strugglin rit now...but they will pay you because they will need you more than you need them (or at least as long as you are the "hot producer). Then you can say, I charge and unless you payin, keep steppin because the beats ain't for free no more.....GET IT? Right now, if you chargin them money, Joe Blow down the street will give them free shit because his parents keep him breaded up and he don't need cash....See? That's just how it works. It's all about the buzz....Other than that, have a full time job or sell dope for your means of income and do beats on the side...ain't no 401k in music anyway bruhbruh......do both, be a juggler in this circus called life!! Good luck and Good karma to all. Peace, Thug & Pro$$$perity, RHYTHMX/Raytona500 $WR

p.s. Always remember: just because someone got an iced out watch and nice chain with a few multi colored diamonds in it, don't mean they're papered up. That might be all they saved up for to fit the rappers starter kit for identity.. :) Happy Holiyays all...RX500

I'm about to hit my fifth year recording/producing Rap music in the Bay and I'm still not where I wanna be. But that shit takes time. Out here, ain't nobody just gonna give you respect just cuz you got a lab.

Like Chris said, "u gotta break bread to make bread". And that's some real shit. Last year, I thought I was a baker at a soup kitchen!

I've learned that I do this because I love the art, not the money. Some of the best artists I've worked with are broke as hell. So I invest in their future through quality production. Best strategy EVER!

Remember this. In the Bay... it's AOB. If you act like one, you get treated like one.

My advice to you. Get the money upfront, or at least a non-refundable deposit. And becareful, you don't want your lab ran through over a few dollars.
