FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) -- A West Sacramento man is facing up to life behind bars after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a Dollar Tree store employee in Fairfield.
A Solano County jury found 46-year-old Tommy Joe Thompson guilty Wednesday of murdering 26-year-old Taneka Talley in March 2006.
Talley was stocking shelves at the discount chain when authorities say Thompson stabbed her.
At a pretrial hearing, a psychiatrist said Thompson admitted he attacked Talley because she was black. Thompson is white.
That prompted Dollar Tree's insurer to first deny death benefits under California's workers' compensation laws, saying the killing was motivated by race and was not work-related. The company later said it would pay full benefits.
