never used that model - but i used a $50 dollar MXL Mic through an MBOX 1 and got a decent sound after it was mixed down. (couldnt tell too much difference between that and a neuman) its not about what you use its how well you can use it. As long as your not using a straight POS mic w/ pos preamp/converters daw mixing engineer lol

Yea I feel you. I was using a Shure SM57 before, which is traditionally used for instruments. I read that Michael Jackson used that mic for Billie Jean, so I tried it out. It sounded good, but this MXL I bought has a certain warmth to it (probably because of the built in tube). It's not a HUGE difference, but it's enough to say "Yea, this mic sounds a bit better".

It is like any other piece of equipment though. If you don't know what you're doing with the BEST equipment, your final product still won't sound good. While a cat with a great ear will make the hottest shit with a $50 mic and a Casio keyboard.

yea but michael jackson probobly used the sm57 through a super nice preamp going into a mixing board in an acoustically treated room ya know. at the end of the day a mic is a mic so the engineer probobly was going for a certain sound for that track and he knew the sm57 could deliver this is why if you go to a high end studio they will have many mics to choose from not just a u87 or a tlm103.

Yup. That's why I'm building my mic collection. Every time I go to a studio these cats have like, 10 mics to choose from. One specific mic might be better for a singer than a rapper, and since I have both coming through, it's wise to have that selection.
