I would suggest picking up the book "All You Need To Know About the Music Business" by Donald Passman. It has a shit load of information about several aspects of the music business. There are several volumes of the book out because the music business is frequently changing.

This book is a great start. It gives you little gems of information. I would say most music business lawyers, artists, and managers these days have a copy of this book somewhere.

Of course, don't use this as the only source of info, seek out classes, get professional opinions, and go to conventions to learn about more.

I listen about a free Sitesell Affiliate program that allows you to search their very focused business forum to find what you are looking for. Also try to get an intern job with a music company such as BMG, Death Row Records or whatever. Don't be shy ! ! !

I recommend you pickin up a copy of "Confessions of a Record Producer" by Moses Avalon. I just started readin this last week and so far its been very insightful on the actual structure of the music bizz with talks of Publishing, distribution, recording, etc. It also gives you real life examples this producer has witnessed with well known artists. One of the things I like the most about this book is that it covers all types of music genres, Hip Hop included(which can be rare in a book like this) so you get a good understanding of everything.
