I HAVE NOT RETURNED TO THE SICCNESS. I'M SIMPLY POSTING THIS REVIEW. NO WELCOME BACKS OR ANY OF THAT STUFF. WITH THAT BEING SAID LETS GET DOWN TO IT.

MOTIF ES

DATE OF PURCHASE 10/3/93

PRICE PAID: $1950 NEW FROM SWEETWATER (NO TAX AND MY SHIPPING WAS FREE)

FIRST OFF I WANNA EXPLAIN SOMETHING. THIS MACHINE IS FOR PROGRAMMERS AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO AT *LEAST* READ AT A 12TH GRADE LEVEL. THIS MACHINE IS GEARED TOWARDS THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH ARPEGGIOS, COMPUTER INTEGRATION, SAMPLING AND MUSIC. IF YOU WANT A BOARD YOU CAN DIVE RIGHT INTO THIS ISN'T FOR YOU. THE WORKSTATION FOR YOU WOULD BE A TRITON WITH THOSE GAY ASS SOUNDS THAT YOU HAVE GROWN TO LOVE.

LETS TALK ABOUT THE MANUALS. THE ES CAME WITH A MANUAL, A DATA LIST (FOR SOUNDS, EFFECTS, ETC ETC ETC) AND A MANUAL FOR COMPUTER INTEGRATION.

THE MANUALS ARE COOL. THEY AREN'T CRYPTIC LIKE THE ROLAND MANUALS BUT IN THE END THEY ARE WHAT? MANUALS...ALL OPERATIONS ARE LAID OUT IN STEPS AND A "HAND" POINTS TO KEY BUTTON PRESSES. KEEP THE MANUAL JUST IN CASE YOU DON'T HAVE THE DVD. SPEAKING OF DVD I GOT ONE FOR FREE. IF YOU PLAN ON GETTING THIS MACHINE TRY TO WATCH THE DVD ***FIRST***. IF YOU DO THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO JUMP RIGHT IN AND MAKE MUSIC.

THE DATA LIST MANUAL IS WHAT ITS NAME IMPLIES. ITS A DATA LIST. MIDI INFO, VICE LIST,WAVEFORMS,DRUMS,TEMPLATES AND ARPEGGIOS ARE ALL LISTED HERE. OVER 1000 VOICES AND OVER 1700 ARPEGGIO PATTERNS TO CHOOSE FROM NOT TO MENTION THE REMIX SETTINGS (MORE ON REMIX LATER). LISTEN HERES THE DEAL IF YOU CANT MAKE A BEAT ON THIS MACHINE (ESPECIALLY AFTER WATCHING THE VID) YOU NEED TO END YOUR MUSIC CAREER.

YOU CAN USE THE MOTIF TO CONTROL DP, SONAR,CUBASE SX AND LOGIC. YES A COMPUTER CAN CONTROL THE MOTIF BUT THIS MACHINE WAS DESIGNED TO *SPECIFICALLY* CONTROL THOSE APPS. WHEN ITS TIME TO CONTROL YOUR COMPUTER YOU CAN CHOOSE WHICH PROGRAM YOU HAVE (YOU DO THIS FROM THE MOTIF), MAKE A COUPLE OF CHANGES AND BAM!!!! YOU'RE READY TO GO. THE ES HAS A PROGRAM THAT YOU CAN USE TO EDIT VOICES, MAKE NEW ONES ETC ETC ETC. THIS IS SOMETHING I WISH ROLAND HAD STARTED DOING A WHILE BACK. YOU CAN USE THIS PROGRAM AND CUBASE (OR ANY OTHER) AT THE SAME TIME. THIS PROGRAM IS ***REQUIRED*** TO TWEAK/EDIT BOARD VOICES SO DONT LOOSE IT. IM DISAPPOINTED AT YAMAHA AS THEY HAVE NO PRO TOOLS SUPPORT. THAT'S FOUL BECAUSE I JUST COPPED A DIGI 002 RACK (REVIEW ON THAT NEXT WEEK). THE ONLY WAY I CAN REALLY INTEGRATE IT WITH PRO TOOLS IS WITH THE OPTIONAL mLAN, MIDI OR ANALOG CABLES.

THE ES HAS FOUR FADERS AND FOUR KNOBS. THESE FADERS ARE USED TO CONTROL VOLUME, PAN, FX, FILTERS, EQ,ATTACK,DECAY,RES AND OTHER FEATURES. YOU ALSO USE THE FADERS AND PANS WHEN USING THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH IT. TRACKS ARE GROUPED IN PARTS. WHAT THAT MEANS IS YOU CAN CONTROL 1-4 VIA THE FADERS. IF YOU WANT TO CONTROL 5-8 VIA FADERS PRESS A NUMBER BETWEEN 5 AND 8, WANNA PAN TRACK 12? PRESS A NUMBER BETWEEN 9 AND 12. VERY SIMPLE.

NOW LETS DISCUSS SOUNDS. IMHO THESE ARE THE BEST STOCK SOUNDS FOUND ON ANY KEYBOARD. I HAVE AN XP60 AND I LOVE IT BUT IT DOESN'T COMPARE. I HAVE A MP-7 (REVIEW ON THAT LATER) AND ITS A TIGHT MACHINE BUT IT DOESN'T COMPARE. IM NOT GOING TO COMPARE IT TO MY PROTEUS, DR 660 OR OTHER MODULES. YOU HAVE TO ****HEAR**** THE ES IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE "MEGAVOICE" SOUNDS/TECHNOLOGY. DO SOME OF THE SOUNDS SUCK? YES THEY DO BUT FOR THE MOST PART MOST OF THE SOUNDS ARE TIGHT. GREAT STRINGS, FAT BASSLINES, NICE SYNTHS EVEN THE GM SOUNDS ARE TIGHT. ONE SOUND IS GOING TO STICK OUT AND ITS GOING TO BE THE VERY FIRST SOUND (A PIANO PATCH). THIS PIANO SOUNDS CLEAN (AND **LOUD**) AS HELL.

THE DRUMS ARE TIGHT. THEY SOUND REAL THICK, BIG, SOLID OR WHATEVER TERM YOUR FEEBLE BRAIN CAN THINK OF. IF YOU AREN'T USING V DRUMS (REVIEW ON THAT IF I DECIDE TO COP A PAIR WITHIN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS) YOU NEED TO USE THESE DRUMS.

LETS GET BACK TO THAT MEGA VOICE STUFF. NOT ALL OF THE SOUNDS ARE MEGA VOICE. MEGA VOICE SOUNDS CAN BE USED WITH CERTAIN ARPEGGIOS TO MAKE IT SOUND AS IF A ***REAL*** PERSON WAS PLAYING. I KNOW YOU ALL HAVE USED ARPS BEFORE (THAT'S WHAT I USE A LOT) BUT YOU HAVE TO HEAR IT TO BELIEVE IT.

THE SOUNDS ARE ALSO GROUPED AS FAVORITES AND CAN BE VIEWED BY CATEGORY. ITS EASY TO SELECT WHICH CATEGORY YOU WANT (THEY ARE LISTED ON THE KEYBOARD). IF YOU SELECT A BASS SOUND ITS GOING TO OFFER A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT BASS BANKS ALL SEPARATED BY TYPED. SO YOUR SYNTH BASS SOUNDS WONT BE GROUPED WITH YOUR UPRIGHT SOUNDS.

THE ES HAS A LOT OF MENU SCROLLING AND SOME OF THE PAGES CAN BE CONFUSING AT TIMES. DIRECTLY UNDER THE SCREEN ARE 11 BUTTONS WHICH CORRESPOND TO WHAT YOU SEE ON THE SCREEN. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN YOU WILL SEE TWO LEVELS. THE TOP LEVEL IS ACCESSED WITH THE TOP BUTTONS AND THE BOTTOM LEVEL THE BOTTOM BUTTONS. ITS EASY FOR NAVIGATION BUT ITS SOOOOOOO MUCH STUFF IN THE ES THAT YOU WILL GET TIRED OF MENU SCROLLING. THE TERM "SMART PAD" COMES TO MIND. WITH 128 VOICES OF POLY YOU CAN DO A LOT WITH THIS BEAST.

****RANT****

IF YOU DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS MACHINES PROCESSING POWER AND YOU SIMPLY MAKE KICK SNARE BEATS YOU DESERVE TO BE SHOT. THIS IS A TIGHT MACHINE THAT SHOULD ONLY BE OWNED BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY AND TALENT TO MAKE TIGHT MUSIC. I KNOW I CAN MAKE TIGHT MUSIC (THAT'S WHY I WAS ABLE TO BUY ES DUMMY) SO IM IN THE DOOR. YOU'RE NOT. IF YOU SUCK BYPASS THIS MACHINE. WE DON'T WANT YOU RAPING THE SOUNDS AND TAKING THIS MACHINE FOR GRANTED. IF YOU WONT TWEAK THE SOUNDS, PRESET PATTERNS, ARPS ETC ETC ETC STAY AWAY!!!!

AT THIS POINT IN TIME I DON'T WANT TO DISCUSS SAMPLING. YES YOU CAN SAMPLE BUT THAT'S SOMETHING I HAVEN'T COVERED BUT YOU CAN INPUT A GUITAR, MIC OR ANOTHER INSTRUMENT AND DO YOUR THING. SLICE IT, DICE IT, RUN IT THROUGH FILTERS WHATEVER YOU WANNA DO CAN BE DONE.

THE MORE RAM THE BETTER AND I SUGGEST USING THE 128MB SMART MEDIA CARD FOR STORAGE. YOU DON'T HAVE DIGITAL OUTS (UNLESS YOU GET THE OPTIONAL CARD) BUT I WOULD GET THE MLAN OPTION BEFORE THE DIGITAL OPTION (IF YOU HAVE MLAN).

WHAT'S TIGHT ABOUT THE ES IS THE REMIX FEATURE. THE NAME IMPLIES WHAT IT DOES. YOU SELECT A PATTERN AND YOU REMIX IT. YOU CAN REMIX IT HUNDREDS OF WAYS. SERIOUSLY ITS NO REASON YOU CANT MAKE MUSIC ON THIS MACHINE....UNLESS....YOU SUCK (OR READ AT A SECOND GRADE LEVEL). REMIXING IS *****EASY****** !!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BANG OUT TRACKS WITH THIS FEATURE IN LIKE 10 MINUTES BUT I SUGGEST GETTING MORE IN DEPTH. YOU CAN TAKE A BASSLINE AND REMIX IT. AFTER YOU REMIX IT YOU CAN REMIX THE REMIXED BASSLINE ALL YOU WANT (REMIX THE BASSLINE 666 TIMES FOR ALL I CARE).

ARPEGGIOS NEED TO BE DISCUSSED AGAIN. ITS LIKE 1700 ARP PATTERNS NOT TO MENTION THE ONES YOU CAN CREATE. YOU HAVE TO *RECORD* THE ARPS AND YOU HAVE THE OPTION OF HOLDING THE KEYS OR USING "HOLD." YOU CAN CHAIN UP TO FIVE ARPS AT ONCE FOR EASY PLAYING, PROGRESSION ECT ETC ETC. ONCE AGAIN ITS NO REASON WHY A PERSON SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO MAKE MUSIC ON THIS MACHINE.

YOU WANT TO DO MOST OF YOUR RECORDING IN PATTERN MODE. PATTERN MODE IS JUST THAT. PATTERN MODE AND EACH PATTERN CAN BE ASSIGNED TO A KEY, A BUTTON OR BANK.

THE ES HAS A RIBBON CONTROLLER A MOD WHEEL AND PITCH WHEEL. ALL OF THESE SEEM TIGHT. I CANT SAY HOW THEY WILL FEEL AFTER I USE IT FOR A YEAR.

WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT THE ES OVERALL?

SOUNDS: 4.5 OUT OF 5

EASE OF USE 2.5 OUT OF 5 (STRAIGHT OUT THE BOX) BUT A 4 OUT OF 5 IF YOU WATCH THE DVD.

VALUE: 5 OUT OF 5

FEATURES: 5 OUT OF 5

BEST WORKSTATION I HAVE EVER USED/OWNED.IF IT WERE TOUCHSCREEN IT WOULD HAVE A MAJOR ADVANTAGE OVER THE TRITON. IM USED TO WINDOW SCROLLING (XP 60) SO I CAN GET AROUND THE MACHINE.

IM IN THE PROCESS OF LAYING DOWN NEW CARPET AND TUNING MY STUDIO. HOW MANY OF YOU CATS HAVE A ******TUNED ROOM****** OR NOW HOW TO DO IT? LMAO!!!!!!!!!! I FIGURE I WILL BE READY TO GO IN LIKE 2 WEEKS. WHEN I DO I WILL POST MY SECOND SONG (FIRST SONG WASN'T SAVE BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE A CARD AT THE TIME).

I FEEL SORRY FOR MOTIF AND MOTIF RACK OWNERS. YOU WERE SHAFTED BIG TIME BUT GUESS WHAT? A NEW MOTIF IS ON ITS WAY AND IT KILLS THE ES SO I UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN...

ANOTHER IN DEPTH REVIEW WILL COME AFTER I RECONFIGURE THE LAB. THIS WILL BE THE *REAL* HANDS ON TEST.

:H THE G.K.:

PS YOU CAN LOOP ONE TRACK FOR 4 MEASURES BUT HAVE OTHER TRACKS LOOPED FOR HOWEVER LONG YOU WANT.

Where did you hear this?
I hate it when these companies do this...Why cant they be like Korg and come out with 1 top notch synth thatll last a few years rather then keep on making better versions every year to make the previous obsolete...

I read recentley ( cant remember where I read to much shit about gear online ) that said Yamaha likes to update the flagship workstation's every two years or so.

And no matter what you buy, there is always gonna be something that comes out that is bigger and bader than what you have.

I'm gon' have to buy dis shit, I am getting tired of my korg's played out sounds.
Learn how to program the synth engine then and make your own sounds.

It kills me that people dump thousands of dollars into keyboards and never take the time to learn how to program them. What a waste.

Actually what kills me is the hoity toity turgid holier-than-Jesus-and-his-mammy-and-thou attitude of you "higher end" producers.

"OMG'Z U DONT KNO HOW 2 USE DA MOSS ENGINEEEEE U R SOOOOOOOOO STUPID."

It's been a goddamn hallmark of this fucking forum. I'm not understanding where the bitterness comes from, but you guys look hella bi-polar and disgruntled. You're going to be 40 years old recovering from your 20th stroke from flipping out over someone having the NERVE to use a stock patch without tweaking it.

You've obviously put in years of blood, sweat and tears into learning your equipment...but sometimes I get the impression it was all because you guys enjoy pissing off a mountain and looking down on people.

lol....im not going to comment on the debate of presets vs tweaking, i dont want to lose the hair on my head. but i will say that i wasnt impressed with the motif rack, i was considering purchasing this, i went and played around with it to test the waters, and i wasnt that impressed, not because i dont know how to work equipment, or not cuz i only use the presets or not cuz i am a 2nd grade reader, but because the sounds didnt catch my ear. and that just boils down to personal preference. And for the record i do know how to program a synth....lol

Drugs are bad, mmmkay... But take the red pill anyway and wake up from the pretend-world you're living in.

With that kind of creativity & imagination, you should think about learning how to make beats. Then you could supply yourself and all your friends with something new to harlem-shake to. Good luck!

OWNERS PERSPECTIVE

IN REGARDS TO THE SAMPLING FEATURES YOU CAN SAMPLE AND CREATE VOICES OR DRUM VOICES. A NORMAL VOICE WILL ALLOW YOU TO SPREAD THE SAMPLE UP AND DOWN THE BOARD (PITCH) WHILE THE DRUM VOICES WILL ALLOW YOU TO ADD DIFFERENT SAMPLES TO EACH KEY. IF YOU WANT TO SAMPLE DRUMS OR CRAZY SOUNDS THAT DONT NEED TO BE PITCHED THIS WOULD BE THE *BEST* WAY TO DO IT.

AFTER YOU SAMPLE YOU HAVE TO ASSIGN IT TO A KEYBANK. THE KEYBANK IS ASSIGNED TO A WAVEFORM AND AFTER COMPLETION YOU MUST CREATE AN "ELEMENT". YOU COMBINE FOUR OF THESE (ELEMENTS) TO MAKE ONE "VOICE". WHEN YOU MAKE ELEMENTS YOU APPLY EQ,PITCH,FILTERS,AMPLITUDE AND OTHER STUFF SO YOU CAN TWEAK IT. YOU CAN RESAMPLE ANY SOUND, LOOP, RIFF OR ARPEGGIO FOUND IN THE ES. YOU CAN SAMPLE IN REVERSE, LOOP OR ONE SHOT. SAMPLING CAN BE DONE AT 48K IF YOU HAVE THE DIGITAL BOARD INSTALLED. IF NOT YOU HAVE A CHOICE OF 44.1K AND LOWER. SAMPLES CAN BE SAVED TO AN EXTERNAL DEVICE (USB) OR SMART MEDIA CARDS (128MB). DIMMS MUST BE INSTALLED AND THE MACHINE HOLDS 2. SO WITH THAT BEING SAID YOU CAN SAMPLE AND DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING WITH IT. I PEEPED THE BACK OF THE MANUAL (PAGE 292) FOR THE SAMPLING BLOCK SPECS. HERE YA GO:

SAMPLES: UP TO 1024 WAVEFORMS (MULTI SAMPLES), UP TO 128 KEY BANKS PER WAVE FORM, UP TO 4096 KEYBANKS.

SAMPLING SOURCE: ANALOG INPUT L/R, STEREO OUTPUT (RESAMPLING) DIGITAL/OPTICAL (REQUIRES AIEB2), mLAN (mLAN16E REQUIRED)

A/D CONVERSION: 20 BIT, 64 x OVERSAMPLING

D/A CONVERSION: 24 BIT, 128 x OVERSAMPLING

SAMPLE DATA BITS: 16

SAMPLING FREQUENCY: 44.1K, 22.5K, 11.025K AND 5.512K (STEREO/MONO), SAMPLING VIA MLAN IS 44.1K AND DIGITAL SAMPLING IS 48K,44K AND 32K.

SAMPLING MEMORY: UP TO 512 MB (RUMOR HAS IT THAT THE ES CAN SUPPORT A GIG OF RAM).

SAMPLE LENGTH MONO 32MB AND STEREO 64MB

SAMPLING TIME: 44.1K IS 6 MIN 20 SECONDS, 22K IS 12 MIN 40 SECONDS, 11K 25 MIN 20 SECONDS AND 5K 55 MIN 40 SECONDS.

SAMPLE FORMAT: ORIGINAL FORMAT, WAV, AIFF, A3000/4000/5000/SU700 FORMAT (LOADABLE ONLY) AKAI 21000/S3000 FORMAT (LOADABLE ONLY)

I WASNT IMPRESSED WITH THE MOTIF RACK OR THE TRITON RACK (I'VE USED BOTH AT ANOTHER STUDIO FOR THE LAST 3 MONTHS). THE REASON BEING I DONT REALLY LIKE RACKS. I FEEL I CAN DO MORE WITH THE SOUNDS IN A WORKSTATION (MORE HANDS ON CONTROL). WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO SOUNDS THE TRITON SOUNDS DIDNT COMPARE TO THE MOTIF SOUNDS. I SAY THIS AFTER USING THEM SIDE BY SIDE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME (3 MONTHS NOT 3 HOURS AT GUITAR CENTER).

MY DESCISION TO PURCHASE WAS KIND OF ODD. A MOTIF OWNER TALKED ME OUT OF BUYING HIS MOTIF AND BUYING AN ES. I DIDNT KNOW WHAT AN ES WAS UNTIL I MET HIM. THE ES, MOTIF AND MOTIF RACK ARE 3 DIFFERENT MACHINES. THEY ARE SIMILAR IN A LOT OF WAYS BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THEY ARE DIFFERENT. SPECS WISE THEY ARE DIFFERENT AND OPERATION WISE THEY ARE DIFFERENT. HELL EVEN THE SOUNDS ARE DIFFERENT (COMPARE THE ES SOUNDS WITH THE MOTIF SOUNDS).

THE ES IS *NOT* A MACHINE THAT YOU CAN DIVE RIGHT INTO AFTER OWNING OR PLAYING ONE FOR 5 MINUTES. I DONT CARE *WHO* YOU ARE, HOW LONG YOU'VE BEEN MAKING MUSIC OR PROGRAMING SYNTHS. YOU HAVE A LOT OF MENU SCROLLING, BUTTONS TO PUSH AND SCREENS THAT LOOK SIMILAR. READING THE MANUAL, WATCHING THE DVD OR HITTING THE WEBSITE IS *REQUIRED*. GOOD LUCK TO ANYONE WISHING TO MAKE A "BEAT OUT THE BOX". IF THATS WHAT YOU WANT SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FACE.

THE SOUNDS ARE NICE TO ME AND IM GOING TO BLOW ITS BRAINS (EXPAND IT) BEFORE I GET MY V-DRUM SET. AT FIRST I DIDNT WANT TO SAMPLE BUT I MIGHT AS WELL. I SHOULD RIP SAMPLES, RUN EM THROUGH THE ES AND SLANG THE KITS ON EBAY FOR 5 OR 10 BUCKS A POP. WHY NOT?

TOO ANYONE READING THIS I NEED ROLAND AND AKAI FORMAT SAMPLES. GET AT ME VIA PM.

:H THE G.K.:

PS NO I HAVENT RETURNED. IM SIMPLY POSTING A REVIEW.

what about previous rm1x owners, speaking of which do you still have yours
