SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A mother loading her 2-year-old son into an SUV was killed Tuesday and five others were wounded in a gunbattle at a strip mall in south Sacramento, authorities said. Two men were inside Fly Cuts & Styles barber shop just before 1 p.m. when two other men came in and started shooting, said Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran.

The men in the barber shop were armed and returned fire, Curran said.

The gun battle apparently moved into the parking lot with at least one of the suspects getting into a white sedan. Curran said the gunfire continued as some of the suspects got away.

A bullet struck the 30-year-old woman in the chest just after she put her son into the child seat of her Chevy Tahoe, Curran said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene; the child was unhurt and has been placed under child protective services.

"We believe she's a totally innocent victim," Curran said.

Four of the five men injured in the gun battle have been taken to local hospitals, including an unidentified man with life-threatening injuries who was shot in the chest, Curran said. He was undergoing surgery, Curran said.

A 37-year-old man, who was one of the barbers working inside the shop, was shot in the ankle. A 28-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and leg. Another man whose age was unknown suffered a leg wound.

The fifth man, a 39-year-old male, suffered a grazing wound.

Authorities have not released the identities. No charges have been filed.

"They are all being treated as victims. We do believe there's a high probability that those we are with are suspects," Curran said.

Police were investigating the crime on a rainy afternoon. It's not clear what the motive was or if an argument preceded the shooting.

He said the strip mall in south Sacramento has been taped off and authorities have found multiple shell casings on the ground. The gunfire damaged several vehicles in the parking lot, including a Chinese restaurant across the street about 200 yards away.

As is the case with all Gainesville City Commission meetings, an armed police officer will be seated near the dais when the board meets today.

Related Links:Gunman fires at Fla. school board, kills self But concerns were raised about the safety at public assemblies after a gunman opened fire at a school board meeting in Panama City on Tuesday, when an officer wasn’t present.

"Anytime that an officer is killed in the line of duty or there is some kind of big event anywhere, we always take a step back and see how we are the same and how we are different,” Gainesville Police Cpl. Tscharna Senn said.

Across the country, local governments were reportedly doing the same, but Senn and local officials interviewed Wednesday said they were confident in the security protocols in place here.

At City Hall, an officer is at every commission meeting, and a deputy is present for Alachua County Commission and School Board meetings.

There was no officer present at a meeting of the Bay County School Board on Tuesday, when Clay Duke, 56, started complaining about taxes and his wife being fired as a teacher before shooting at close range as the superintendent begged, "Please don't."

Neither the superintendent nor any board members were injured.

Duke was shot by a security guard who entered after he began firing. Injured, Duke shot and killed himself.

Before pulling out his handgun, he got up from his seat and spray painted a red V on the wall, a symbol used in the film and graphic novel “V for Vendetta.”

Senn said he would have been arrested the moment he did that at City Hall.

Lee Pinkoson, the chairman of the County Commission, said that during meetings, the possibility of such an incident is not something he thinks about.

Pinkoson said even if the county went to the expense to put up metal detectors, "you can't stop every bad thing from happening. Hopefully it won't."

"I know I'm not in favor of putting in metal detectors or going to extremes," he added.

Alachua County School Board spokeswoman Jackie Johnson said there are no immediate plans to change security protocol.

There have been no violent incidents during the last 20 years at School Board meetings, Johnson said.

“Once somebody got a little bit belligerent and was asked to leave,” she said.

City spokesman Bob Woods said about three years ago, a man came in during regular hours, not during a meeting, and made “generalized threats” before he was trespassed from the building.

That was the only relatively alarming issue Jeanna Mastrodicasa could recall from her four years on the City Commission.

Still, she has seen a number of heated discussions -- but nothing that has risen to violence.

"We've certainly had our share of angry people,” Mastrodicasa said. “Do I think that it’s going to happen? No. But anything could happen anywhere."

Christopher Curry, Jackie Alexander and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Shit is sad...

RIP To Monique Nelson (i think that was the girls name)

What pissed me off the most is, that her son saw his mother died. He sat in his car seat while her mother caught a bullet to her chest, now a kid will have a shitty x-mas and an ugly way to start the new year.

Some motherfuckers need to get their heads right and think about others who will get hurt in the process, if you planning on killing somebody. Do it when they're slippin, this type of shit shouldn't be allowed by any street smart person.

This world is not getting any better, we living our last days...

Or how about going to school, getting a job, and living a decent life so you don't end up hurting people or going to prison like X? If you can't go to school or get a job then go to the Boys & Girls Club and do something positive for a change. What a concept.
