I'm still in the air about this, but I'm leaning more towards it being real or something the government is running on the people. If it is delusional parasitosis, research needs to be conducted to explain why people who have never heard of each other and had no contact with each other are saying they have the same disease/sickness/parasite.
Here is an excerpt from one of the links and I would have wigged out if this happened to me (bold mine):
