BUSH CONTINUES MISLEADING ON PRISON ABUSE SCANDAL

In his speech before the U.S. Army War College this week, President Bush
again tried to absolve himself and his Administration from any
responsibility for the atrocities at Abu Ghraib prison. He said the abuse
was "disgraceful conduct by a few American troops who dishonored our country
and disregarded our values" [1]. But new reports show that the
Administration - and President Bush himself - approved key documents that
originally opened the door to the abuse.

Since the scandal broke, the Administration has said that, in Iraq, it
always insisted on following the Geneva Conventions on humane treatment for
prisoners. However, in a letter to the Red Cross dated December 24, 2003,
the Bush Administration asserted that detainees in Iraq "were not entitled
to the full protections of the Geneva Convention" [2] This disregard for
internationally-recognized human rights regulations was consistent with a
January 2002 directive by the White House labeling the Geneva Conventions
"quaint" and "obsolete" [3]. It is also consistent with a Newsweek report
showing that "President Bush, along with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
and Attorney General John Ashcroft signed off on a secret system of
detention and interrogation that opened the door to such methods" of abuse
and torture as documented at Abu Ghraib [4]. Those secret orders were
designed "to sidestep the historical safeguards of the Geneva Conventions."

Instead of acknowledging these documents and upholding his pledge to "usher
in an era of personal responsibility," [5] the Bush Administration is now
assaulting those who brought the story to light. Sgt. Samuel Provance told
the Associated Press he has "been disciplined by the military and stripped
of his security clearance" after he publicly refuted the President's claims
that the abuse was only the work of a few soldiers [6]. Meanwhile, Secretary
of Defense Donald Rumsfeld banned "digital cameras, camcorders and
cellphones with cameras" from all military installations in Iraq [7]. And,
as MSNBC reports, the whole Administration is "lashing out at American
journalists, adding their official voices to the chorus of talk radio,
conservative Web site and newspaper columnists" who claim the media's
coverage of the scandal and Iraq in general "is undermining support for the
war" [8].

Hmm.. Well, I'm not at much liberty to speak on all that other shit, since I really don't know the facts surrounding this scandal, but here's a fact. President George W Bush shouldn't be allowed to even say the words "Geneva Convention" any longer. For those of you who actually knows what the Geneva Convention is will feel me, if not in my opinion you have some serious issues. But, that's just my opinion. For those of you who have no idea what it is, study to show thy self approved.

The US is adhering more to the Geneva Convention than all of these other radicals, which is all that matters. You all act like you'd rather see more US deaths, just so we can keep a spic-and-span image.
oh yeah, we're adhering to the geneve convention so well. especially with guantanamo bay, showing hussein on tv when captured, the prison abuse. yep, we're a model to the world.

A majority of the sources of information from this site, cite references and gather its "intelligence" from your "legit" media sources (i.e. New York Times, LA Times, Newsweek, MSNBC, CNN, USA Today, ect...).

Tadou ever heard the expression "Lead by Example" or is that too foreign of a concept to grasp. Hate, violence & hypocrisy only breeds more of the same thing. It's spinning the same wheel over & over again suspended in mid-air, ain't going nowhere but keeps spinning & spinning, take a look @ history...

But go ahead and fall into the propaganda targeted for the masses to fall into and rationalize death, violence and our civil & human rights violations w/ whatever petuliant self-righteous patriotic justification you need.

I mean the excuse "well its not as bad they do to themselves, blah blah blah" to the curb w/ that iShhh
"2 wrongs don't make a right" I bet that's a new one for ya as well...

^^ Uh...friend...we could have shot Hussein in the head on TV and nobody would have done or said shit about it.

Torturing prisoners is one thing....murdering them is another. And so far, there is ZERO evidence of murdering prisoners.
The white house has admitted to 2 Iraqi murders at Abu Ghraib while in custody...meaning the real number is probably more like 10.

^^ Out of how many tens of thousands of total prisoners, though? And whether or not Democrats and Hippies everywhere called for an investigation, one would take place regardless. And that man or woman or men or women will responsible just the same for that death, and will be punished accordingly.
Wrong. The white hous ehas photos it won't release, just as it will make any and all attempts to forget Abu Ghraib completely. bush is having it bulldozed and the prisoners involved will likely recieve the martial equivalent of a slap on the wrist, just so that they won't have long, involved, trails that would be journalistic chum for reporters.

Take a look at what history? The Romans, who's downfall was self-destruction, and not war? Or what about the Ottomans, who had the same exact fate?
Our downfall is/will be Curious George Jr.

Hate, violence, hypocrisy....if they were prevalent, that would be a problem, yes. But building schools and healing the sick is nowhere near violent or hateful. if some prisoners happen to get roughed up, or insurgents decide to fight from a civilian back yard---that is on them. There is no need to have guns and artillery rounds at a wedding...NONE. And you already know the Americans get jumpy when you fire guns into the air, WHY FUCK AROUND?

The Arabs do things their way. In places like Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iraq, AK-47s are sold and fired off in marketplaces, right next to food and clothing merchants. In a place with as huge security holes as Iraq, I wouldn't blame people for stockpiling an arsenal. And who knows those weren't planted after the fact anyways? Your response to this will be "Look a commie Libbie making conspiracy theories...of course you can hypothesize about anything." Yes, of course you can. But the fact is I seriously doubt that was a militant resistance wedding.

And why should you blame Iraqis for not catering to the US Troops? It should be the other way around. Only an American would say something like "they should have known how we are!". Wrong. We should learn how they are. It's a thing called cultural sensibility, and it is a major reason teh ground forces in Iraq have major problems discerning friend from foe, and the difference between good and bad courses of action. We are invading Iraq. Iraq is not hosting the US. We should have taken time to learn them...they shouldn't have to learn about our fears and sensibilities at the end of a .223 round.

All this "targeted for the masses" stuff makes you sound like a female. The Iraq war plan is not a new sandwich or stereo, its about human life. And we all have our own views on human life & rights.
The Iraq War plan, just like chlorox bleach, just like the continuing existence of the Patriot Act, has to be marketed to Americans to ensure Bush's re-election and prevent widespread protest and chaos.

If you have nothing to hide....why worry? 9/10, it is not about strip searches, its about reading e-mails and tapping phones. If i was plotting to destroy buildings or suicide bomb a hotel, it is my own damn fault if my phone is tapped and i get caught. That is not about civil rights, that is about COMMON SENSE
I agree with this. I have a few major objections to the Patriot Act, but for the most part I believe in better surveillance. Fuck the fact that I am now on the no fly list though. Faggot ass fucks.

Since a grammar book is foreign to you, I can't even understand that first part.
Oh tadou, who claims to be down with hip-hop yet cannot understand the words of someone not speaking proper English. What fun it must be to live in such a self-created reality. "I'm down with rap, but if they don't have MacNeil-Lehrer grammar, I will discount them"

As for the second part, 2 wrongs DON"T make a right. Which is the same reason we don't need to be NEGATIVE and viciously ATTACK the military and the whole executive branch for what happened. We need to be open-minded and understand what happened and put in measures to sure it doesn't happen again.
EXACTLY. Don't re-elect Bush, and we won't have someone with mental capacity of a High school graduate making large-scale decisions about American policy.
