i found this at a site for a local recording studio, thought it might add something to the producer debate.

The Role of the Producer
At most sessions there is one person who has the final word concerning the music. For example, a producer can decide the tempo of the song, which take of a particular performance is the "keeper," what the general sound of each instrument should be, how the instruments are best combined during mixing, and with what kind of effects. It is the producer’s job to oversee the recording project as a whole including the setting of budgets and devising a plan-of-attack to produce the recording within the time and financial constraints.

Hiring a producer can greatly enhance the quality of your project because he/she functions as an objective, fresh set of ears. The producer's job is to constantly evaluate the recorded performances with respect to how they fit together to create the best, most creative, end product. The producer is supposed to work with "big picture" in mind at all times, taking the information given to him by the performers as to what their overall intentions are with their music, and using that knowledge to create the final master tape. Refraze can provide producers for hire on selected projects.

There is a difference between an engineer and a producer. Your engineer is not expected to produce your project. If you would like one of our engineers to produce your project, you must discuss the production of the project with the engineer and make sure he/she is agreeable to such a situation. Our engineers have the right to add a producer’s fee. Rates will be discussed and agreed upon before the project begins

This is the 1900-1990 traditional view of a producer. Now producers has developed into THE beat maker. On a major label it still half ass operates like that But not on the indi level....Now its more artist driven production.....

You people are still being confused by the fact that a lot of people do both, produce AND put beats together themselves I see. The roll of a producer has not changed and will not change. It doesn't make any difference whether its rap, rock, major label independant label. This is not even open for debate. The ONLY people trying to debate this stuff is the people who obviously don't have a professional career working in that field. You will NEVER see this kind of discussion in a professional forum.

Let's try this again... Please pay attention! NO, MAKING BEATS DOES NOT MAKE YOU A PRODUCER!

some of you idiots swear that we have GENRE specific rules. like genre specific contracts or words or titles that only apply to one genre.
This is not even open for debate. The ONLY people trying to debate this stuff is the people who obviously don't have a professional career working in that field. You will NEVER see this kind of discussion in a professional forum.
DAMN RIGHT!!!!

i have tried to get this kind of topic to go to a REAL audio forum myself. that way i can crack up while PROFESSIONALS make fun of most of these guys......you post madness like this on some of the sites i have been two and you will be torn a new one.

in fact just take this to a MILD recording site www.homerecording.com and see if they dont rip you apart.....

lol.......damn.....I done got some shit started. Ya'll still talkin' about this shit?

In the world of Hip-Hop.......the term "producer" has become a misnomer. What is a misnomer?

misnomer - noun
a name that does not suit what it refers to, or a use of such a name

Me and Cool Nutz discussed this over the phone a while back.....he basically said I was right.......but that it's different when it comes to Hip-Hop.

So basically.......because a bunch of dumb asses fucked up the definition about 10-15 years ago........we're all stuck with it. And people continue to keep the misinformation going by continuing to mis-label people's job descriptions.

I KNOW what a "producer" is.......but apparently for the sake of album credits when it comes to Hip-Hop......whoever made the beat is "the producer."

I still think that's the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. But "whateva."
