NUTLEY, New Jersey (KTLA) -- A New Jersey mother was arrested for allegedly letting her 5-year-old daughter use a tanning booth, causing the girl to suffer burns.
Patricia Krentcil, 44, has been charged with second-degree child endangerment.
The nurse at her daughter Anna's school noticed that the girl had a rash, according to a report on Good Morning America.
Anna told the nurse that it was from going tanning with her mother, and the school contacted child services.
Essex County prosecutors say they believe Krentcil took her daughter into the tanning booth without the salon's knowledge.
They declined to name the salon involved, citing the ongoing investigation.
Krentcil denies any wrongdoing, saying she's taken her daughter to the tanning salon with her, but has never let her use a tanning booth.
Instead, Krentcil insists that Anna suffered from an outdoor sunburn.
"The pediatrician said that she's got a little sunburn, but it was that only weekend we were out doing the gardening," Krentcil told GMA.
She says Anna's burns are not severe, and she's treating them with an over-the-counter ointment.
The girl's father, Rich Krentcil, told NBC 4 New York that his daughter told classmates she "went tanning with Mommy."
He said he thinks a teacher overheard and inaccurately connected the girl's burns to the tanning salon trip.
"This whole big thing happened, and everyone got involved," he told the station.
"It was 85 degrees outside, she got sunburned. That's it. That's all that happened."
Patricia Krentcil is currently free on $25,000 bail.
Anna is in now in her father's custody.
New Jersey law prohibits anyone under 14 from using a tanning facility.
Teens older than 14 are allowed to go to tanning salons if they have parental consent.
