Mista Cane
Who Am I? Now We Begin…
Annihilation Entertainment

No lie, this is one of the rawest albums to come out in 2002.

I had to start the review like that ‘cause I really feel that way. Mista Cane has put together an extremely solid package for his second release. From his voice (powerful enough to remind me of Xzibit or San Quinn at different times) to his delivery to his beats provided by E.Q. for Blazin Productionz, everything comes together for one chunky album.

“Now We Begin” starts the album off aggressively, almost like a battle rap, and establishes Cane’s point of view. “Choices,” featuring M-16, slows things down and gives the listener something to actually think about like many other songs on Now We Begin. “This here’s a song / This ain’t no wack ass rhyme and hook / I’m talkin’ life / Take a minute yo / It’s time to look…” sums up the song nicely. “The Truth” keeps it slow again and kills it with some chanting, church sounding voices in the background. “That’s The Game” is another banger (although the mix seemed a little off to me) with some real words about life. “Summertime” lightens the mood and speaks on the Bay Area summertime way of life. “Invisible Father” is one I can really feel ‘cause it reminds me of my father and I know others out there can relate also. “…we ain’t deserve to be poor and have to use food stamps / Just ‘cause you was too dumb / To keep your dick in your pants…” One of my favorites is “It’s A Must” featuring Young Bonez. Bonez is new to me, but people need to stay tuned ‘cause he will make noise. He’s got a brutal voice and delivery. “In The World Today” is another one reflecting on life and it works again. “U Can Hate” brings it back to some savage battle type shit and the chorus is killin’ ‘em. The final song, “Why Must It Be That Way,” ends it perfectly. “…we lose loved ones but never let the memories fade / Why is hard to feel good but the pain / It stays / And all I ever seem to have / Is these rainy days / Why is success so rare / But you can fail dog / In many ways…”

I’m real rough on cats these days ‘cause a lot of shit the last few years has been garbage, but Cane came through with one of my favorite albums in the last few years and showed me that the new generation will carry the Bay once the vets decide to hang it up. With only a few stumbles and mis-steps, Who Am I? Now We Begin… has what everyone in the Bay has been fiendin’ for. If you’re sleepin’ or afraid to take a chance on a newcomer, take a risk and be surprised.

Good shit Cane.

My Review Of Mista Cane - Who Am I? Now We Begin

Overall I thought it was a very good album. A 4/5 worth getting. Check it out:

1) "Intro"

Just the intro. A whole bunch of phone calls on an answering machine.

2) "Now We Begin"

The title track is full of heat. The beat from E.Q. is tight as fuck! Mista Cane comes clean on the mic and I'm feeling his lyrics. He talks about all the mainstream rappers who change their name and spit fake rhymes to make money. My favorite track on the album, a tight track overall.

3) "Choices" ft. M-16

A clean beat and nice background effects to this track. E.Q. lays down another good beat. M-16 starts the track off with a good verse. Mista Cane and M-16 talk about all the bad choices they've made in life and how they are dealing with them now. A good track with a good topic, I'm feeling it.

4) "John Wapes" (skit)

A little nerdy radio DJ annouces the next track.

5) "Keep it G-A-N-S-T-A"

Another good beat from E.Q. A harder track from Mista Cane here. A good mix of hip-hop and gansta rap. His style fits perfectly with the beat and his flows are clean. A tight track overall, I'm feeling it. It ends with the nerdy DJ.

6) "The Truth"

A very good lyrical track. A good beat from E.Q., but the power of the track comes from Mista Cane's lyrics. He flows about how it's a joke to make it big in the rap game. He talks about how you can't speak your mind. A very good track for the lyrics he comes with.

7) "That's the Game" ft. Young Bonez

A pretty good from E.Q., but it's nothing special. Mista Cane comes clean on the mic, but it's too much of a hip-hop styled track for me. Young Bonez comes clean on the hook. A pretty good track overall, but it's nothing special.

8) "I Don't Think So"

Another one of my favorite tracks. The beat by E.Q. is clean and I like the background instruments. Mista Cane comes clean on the mic. He flows about how people try to compare their life to his and how wrong they are. Another track with a good topic. I'm feeling it.

9) "Summertime"

Mista Cane reppin the Bay Area on this track. The beat has a real hip-hop feel to it and Mista Cane spits some laid back styled lyrics. It's more of a party type track. A nice laid back type of track to bump. I'm feeling it.

10) "Invisible Father"

Mista Cane raps about his father who was never around to raise him. It's a song to all those fathers who left their child when they were young. He uses the words "invisible father" to represent the dad he never had. A song with a lot of feeling behind it. Another good topic. Good track overall.

11) "Hip Hop"

Mista Cane flows about hip-hop on this track. It has a real hip-hop feel to it. E.Q. laces him up with a good beat and Mista Cane just flows. I like the violin in the background instruments. A true hip-hop track, I'm feeling it.

12) "It's a Must" ft. Young Bonez

I'm feeling Young Bonez on this track. Both have more of a hard style to a harder beat. A good mix of rap and hip-hop. They talk about how they're rising in the rap scene. A good track, nothing special, but good.

13) "In the World Today"

Some news clips about kidnapping and murder start this track off. He flows about how the world seems to be going down all around. He talks about all the bad things that happen in the world. Another good topic to flow about. A good track overall.

14) "U Can Hate"

Another of my favorite tracks. Everything fits together perfectly. The beat is tight and I'm feeling Mista Cane's flow. He rips up the mic on this track. I can't really say enough about this track, just bump it loud!

15) "Who Am I" (remix)

More of a softer beat on this track. Nice piano work in the background. He flows about how he is and what some of his dreams and goals are. A lot of real talk on this track. Just spitting from the heart on this track. I kinda like the first track more, but this one gives a little different feel because of the beat. I'm feeling it though.

16) "Ah Ha"

He flows about all those up and coming artists who say they're coming with something new, but never do. He just talks about all those fake rappers in the game. A good beat by E.Q. for Mista Cane to flow to. Another good topic to talk about. I'm feeling it.

17) "Why Must it be That Way"

I'm not really feeling the production on this track by E.Q. Mista Cane does have some clean flows though. He just talks about how hard it is in life and how he's trying make it. This would have been a better track if the production was a bit better, but I like the lyrics either way.

18) "Outro"

Just some talking to finish the album with. Mista Cane just says some shout outs. A nice piano beat to finish it off with. Nice little outro to finish the album.

Overall this is a very good lyrical album. There is a wide range of topics that Mista Cane flows about. The production from E.Q. is consistent throughout the album with a couple of knoccin tracks. This is more of a hip-hop album, but it has plenty of rap styled tracks as well. A very good debut from Mista Cane. Pick yourself up a copy.

Overall rating = 4/5
