Mista Cane
Who Am I? Now We Begin…
Annihilation Entertainment
No lie, this is one of the rawest albums to come out in 2002.
I had to start the review like that ‘cause I really feel that way. Mista Cane has put together an extremely solid package for his second release. From his voice (powerful enough to remind me of Xzibit or San Quinn at different times) to his delivery to his beats provided by E.Q. for Blazin Productionz, everything comes together for one chunky album.
“Now We Begin” starts the album off aggressively, almost like a battle rap, and establishes Cane’s point of view. “Choices,” featuring M-16, slows things down and gives the listener something to actually think about like many other songs on Now We Begin. “This here’s a song / This ain’t no wack ass rhyme and hook / I’m talkin’ life / Take a minute yo / It’s time to look…” sums up the song nicely. “The Truth” keeps it slow again and kills it with some chanting, church sounding voices in the background. “That’s The Game” is another banger (although the mix seemed a little off to me) with some real words about life. “Summertime” lightens the mood and speaks on the Bay Area summertime way of life. “Invisible Father” is one I can really feel ‘cause it reminds me of my father and I know others out there can relate also. “…we ain’t deserve to be poor and have to use food stamps / Just ‘cause you was too dumb / To keep your dick in your pants…” One of my favorites is “It’s A Must” featuring Young Bonez. Bonez is new to me, but people need to stay tuned ‘cause he will make noise. He’s got a brutal voice and delivery. “In The World Today” is another one reflecting on life and it works again. “U Can Hate” brings it back to some savage battle type shit and the chorus is killin’ ‘em. The final song, “Why Must It Be That Way,” ends it perfectly. “…we lose loved ones but never let the memories fade / Why is hard to feel good but the pain / It stays / And all I ever seem to have / Is these rainy days / Why is success so rare / But you can fail dog / In many ways…”
I’m real rough on cats these days ‘cause a lot of shit the last few years has been garbage, but Cane came through with one of my favorite albums in the last few years and showed me that the new generation will carry the Bay once the vets decide to hang it up. With only a few stumbles and mis-steps, Who Am I? Now We Begin… has what everyone in the Bay has been fiendin’ for. If you’re sleepin’ or afraid to take a chance on a newcomer, take a risk and be surprised.
Good shit Cane.
