LOS ANGELES – A 33-year-old woman whose ex-husband allegedly attacked her with a chain saw died Monday nearly two weeks after the assault in which she also suffered severe burns, authorities said.
The woman, whose name was being withheld pending notification of relatives, died Monday afternoon at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said sheriff's Deputy Scott Gage.
The woman was attacked Sept. 28 in the unincorporated Lennox area when her ex-husband, Carlos Hernandez Romo, found her with another man, authorities said.
Witnesses said that the woman's boyfriend ran out of the home naked and asked people to call police. A fire also erupted and the woman came rushing out of the apartment trying to extinguish her flaming clothes.
The woman suffered cuts to her upper torso and burns to 90 percent of her body.
The charges against Romo have been amended from attempted murder to murder, Gage said. His bail also has been revoked.
Romo was a gardener who kept a chain saw and gasoline at hand.
The woman's boyfriend was treated for cuts to the upper body and released.
Lennox is located about 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
