BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A convicted killer who tried to break back in jail was in critical condition Tuesday at Holmes Medical Center. Sylvester Jiles was released from the Brevard County jail on probation last Friday, but Monday night he tried to climb a razor wire-topped fence to get back in.
Jiles said he feared his victim's family would come after him, but the family told Eyewitness News they never threatened him; they wanted to see him back behind bars, but they never imagined he would try to climb over a fence loaded with razor wire to get there.
"I don't know why someone would do something so silly as to break back into jail," Duane Prouse told Eyewitness News.
Duane and his family wanted justice for the murder of his son, 19-year-old Dustin and, when they saw Jiles, the man who shot him, get eight years probation for the killing last week, they didn't think they were going to get it.
Instead of walking away a free man, Jiles is now hospitalized. Authorities say he came to the Brevard County jail Monday night and asked to be locked up in fear for his life. When attendants told him to file a police report, he simply walked over to the fence and tried to break back in.
Jiles suffered severe cuts and was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, under guard at a hospital in Melbourne.
Duane's family said, if Jiles felt threatened, it wasn't anything they did.
"Did you make any threats?" WFTV reporter Kevin Oliver asked Duane.
"No, I have not made a threat to anybody. We've been at home trying to deal with what's been going on with our family and trying to get through this," he said.
Duane doesn't deny they are pleased he is off the streets. They said they were in fear for their own safety after his release.
"I only got two more sons left and I can't lose another one," Duane said.
When Jiles was set free on probation, the judge warned him if he does anything wrong he could be locked back up for 15 years. If he survives his climb over the fence, Jiles could get what he was looking for, a trip back inside
