A San Jose man who saw his face in a "Fugitive Watch" newspaper turned himself in to police Sunday for allegedly beating and stabbing a man and stealing his shoes late last year, according to officials. Jesse Vigil, 18, called the Fugitive Watch hotline and spoke with founder Steve Ferdin, an ex-San Jose cop. Vigil, who was told to go home and wait for police, was arrested at his San Jose residence on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery, according to police spokesman Mike Sullivan.
"Fugitive Watch" is a San Jose-based television show, Web site and newspaper created by Ferdin and Scott Castruita, a police sergeant.
On Nov. 14, Vigil was allegedly riding a light rail train around 12:30 a.m. when he followed the male victim off the trolley at the Capitol and Narvaez station, according to Ferdin. According to witnesses, the assailant grabbed the victim from behind, stabbed him in the back four times and kicked him in the face repeatedly until he was unconscious. The suspect took the victim's sport shoes and pushed him onto the tracks, according to Ferdin.
The victim was left in a coma for one week. At one point, it was unclear whether the victim, whose name and age has not been released, would survive, Ferdin said.
The attacker's identity was not known, but police had surveillance of the suspect from the trolley. Using stills from that footage, "Fugitive Watch" published the suspect's face on its Web site and March
