A British woman was today decapitated by a madman with a machete on the holiday island of Tenerife.
The crazed killer attacked the 62-year-old without uttering a word in a shopping centre in Los Cristianos, in Tenerife.
Witnesses said he then fled the store with the severed head in his hands, with blood dripping to the ground.
Security guards chased him down the street and rugby tackled him to the floor, holding him until police arrived.
An eye-witness told local radio: 'I was parking my car outside the supermarket and I saw this man running out with something bloody in his hands.
'It was a head. He had it in his hands. The security guards chased him and threw him to the floor and overpowered him.'
The witness said the head rolled along the ground as the suspect was apprehended.
An English couple who were in the shop and witnessed the atrocity said: they couldn't believe it.
'This guy just walked in,pulled out a big knife and started stabbing her,' they said. 'I still find it hard to believe it was a real head.'
Another witness said: 'I saw him running down the street. We thought at first he was carrying a mannequin's head.'
Colin Kirby said: 'He was a Hispanic looking guy who was very scruffy. He was walking behind me carrying behind what I thought was a joke head.
'Security guards rushed from the shop where he'd been, chased him across the road and by this time he was pinned to the floor. By this time he was empty-handed and was on the other side of the road.
'The police arrived and the security were trying to get him on the floor.'
There were conflicting reports that the weapon may have been a machete, a sword or even a spade.
Police said a homeless Bulgarian man, with a criminal record, had been arrested on suspicion of murder.
