SAN DIEGO — A 21-year-old man from San Diego is accused of strangling his 55-year-old roommate in Chicago just eight hours after moving in with him.
Grant Muren was arrested in Chicago Jan. 23 on suspicion of first-degree murder and concealing a homicide in connection with the death of Charles Clark, whose body was found in his townhouse in the Chicago suburb of Naperville on Jan. 22, according to DuPage County authorities.
Muren, a former Carmel Valley resident who attended high school at San Dieguito Academy in Encinitas, allegedly killed Clark during an argument that erupted following a sexual encounter.
Muren attacked Clark with a chair after the men had been intimate, and then strangled him, Assistant State’s Atty. Tim Diamond said. Muren then flooded the residence with natural gas from the oven before trying to ignite lease paperwork that he had stuffed inside a toaster on the kitchen counter, Diamond said.
The men met through Craigslist, where Clark, a self-employed computer technician, had advertised for a roommate, the prosecutor said. Muren had moved in Jan. 21, the same day of the murder.
Clark’s girlfriend discovered his body the next morning when she entered the townhouse after she was unable to contact Clark. Inside, she was met with “the overpowering smell of natural gas,” Diamond said. After turning off the oven, the girlfriend found Clark’s body in an upstairs bedroom, authorities said.
Police found the charred paperwork inside the toaster, as well as other burned papers in the oven, along with cleaning wipes that appeared to have blood on them, Diamond said.
Police arrested Muren Jan. 23, and he eventually told them that he attacked Clark after they had been sexually intimate, prosecutors said.
Clark’s autopsy showed signs of an extensive struggle, including numerous contusions to his head, and signs of strangulation. In addition, the tip of his right thumb had been bitten off, Diamond said.
Muren has a juvenile arrest record and some prior arrests for domestic battery, Diamond said. A former roommate in Kane County had taken out an order of protection against Muren, according to prosecutors and court records. Since then, Muren had apparently spent time living with various friends and in California, where his mother resides, according to authorities.
