Famed heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, who recently signed with the restructured M-1 Global fight promotion, today issued a letter to his fans in Japan, and in it, he hinted that the organization might hold a New Year’s show in Japan. Emelianenko’s letter, translated into English, appears on the MFC M-1 website.
Earlier this month, M-1 Global announced that Emelianenko, one of the most dominant fighters in mixed-martial-arts history and the sport’s most sought-after free agent, signed a long-term deal with the organization. During that initial press conference, new Chief Executive Officer Monte Cox said that the organization would likely hold its first event in February — with Emelianenko in the main event — as we reported here on MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
However, in today’s letter, Emelianenko says he’s contacted M-1 Global executives about hosting a New Year’s event in Japan — and that the only thing that may keep it from happening is the short time frame in which they have to organize the show.
Wrote Emelianenko:
It’s always a pleasure to read fans’ mail. And it’s a great pleasure to receive it from the Japanese fans. It’s them who I used to meet New Year with celebrating my victories. They’ve always inspired me through the toughest moments, hardest bouts of my entire career. Last years I thought a lot about the proverb saying “New Year’s Eve defines the whole coming year.“
Being in that country is a holiday itself. Exciting culture, one of the richest histories, wonderful traditions. We’d experienced it every year and now me and my team miss it much.
Still if you wish something really bad you don’t give up half way through. I contacted M-1 Global direction asking them to keep this tradition. You know what? They fully understood me in my wish to keep fighting in Japan when it’s New Year’s Eve.
Now it all depends whether it’s possible to organise such kind of event we all got used to. That’s why i address to all of you fans out there. Me and M-1 Global will do our best to give you one more Championship in this New Year’s Eve taking place in Japan. I would be extremely happy if our wishes come true.
Yours faithfully, Fedor Emelianenko
While most of this may seem like wishful thinking of Emelianenko’s part, the fact that M-1 Global executives are involved is telling.
The two most likely dates for the possible event would appear to be Dec. 29 (Saturday) and Dec. 30 (Sunday).
