INTERVIEW WITH NEVER ONE
OF LOW TOWN RECORDS
MERCED, CALIFAZ
(1) 4 Tha people that don’t know, who u be n what u represent?
Call me Nev or call me Never off that bomb and that liquor……yah you know, gracias for the interview and for the outlet to reach even more of our gente……..Im from Merced and I represent Northern Califaz…..I am the C.E.O. of Low Town Records and the founder of the groups Low Down and Minority Militia………
(2) When did u 1st start rappin and how’d u get in2 this rap game?
I started rappin when I was 14 or 15 for the love of the music and the dreamz of just being heard……I did the typical karoeke recordin shit and moved on to 4trax and so on….…In 1991 we started Low Down and since then I think we’ve been on over 58 CD’s and soundtrax, 5 Movies, 5 Videos, recorded over 450 songz, and stayed together for 11 years as a group and we are gonna continue to hit the world with this underground Norteno music……..
(3) What was it like growin up in Merced tryin to get in2 this rappin business?
Well the rappin bizzness is a bitch already so doin it from here in Merced was difficult to get labels to fuck with us, but it only made us better and gave us more practice you know………I don’t want it to sound like I’m braggin but I be tellin the homeboyz that after all these muthafuckin years of rappin, shit we better be tight or what the fuck are we doin this shit for, que no……We might not be rich right now but I know once we get the right formula its gonna bubble over…....We are still not getting the ferria that we think we should be getting but I think some new opportunitiez will be comin for us in the near future………..There’s a movie being released called “Downtime” and Low Down did 2 new videos for all the Ene’z worldwide…….We did one here in Merced and the other in Alkatraz……..I recently found out it will be on DVD and available to rent at all Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos Nationwide.
(4) You had some choice words for a couple of Darkroom Members on your website at 1 point….What was all that about n have the 2 groups mediated since then?
Believe it or not, even though I might be soundin like O.J., I didn’t do that shit……Although I aint friendz with all of them, if I got a problem with one of them I will hit em up myself…….. muthafuckas type whatever name they want on them g-books………Someone signed on as Lil Wyno and he doesn’t even have a computer, plus it was all masa so I know that even if Wyno did hit a computer somewhere it wasn’t him………Either way I know some fools had some choice wordz for me, but I aint even trippin on this computer bullshit you feel me…….it just shows me who was real thru thick and thin.….If you don’t know me don’t speak on me and if you wanna speak on me, we could take it to the streets cause I gives a fuck………Im 29 and still droppin muthafuckas…….We could talk about it like men or go about it like some animals……..I aint got no reason to speak down on darkroom, shit I got it tatted across the top of my back…….We just no longer do music together…….We aint mad at them for the fact that they aint holdin us back……..They got their label and we got ours……..
(5) What do you have to say 2 all tha fans that got involved in that mess n started takin sides with who they thought was more “real”?
As far as who’s side they takin, be a leader not a follower…….Its music……I bump what I like to bump, not what my homie thinks I should listen to……that’s what music is about…….To me it sounds like 12 year old junior high shit……..Whether Low Down is better or whether Darkroom is better, it aint puttin money in my pocket and it aint feedin my kids……..And as far as Ive heard, I don’t think theres any trophiez being handed out either………
(6) What do u see in the future for Lowdown and Never One?
Well Im gonna keep on doin this music shit……….. Im gonna keep on puttin down for our side and our struggle…….Im gonna keep on smokin bomb weed when I could afford it, red bud when I cant……..Im gonna keep on smashin on the first 2 that step…….Im a keep on hustlin in these calles……..Im gonna continue to be unemployed……...I love this music so damn much that I know the right opportunity will come for Low Town Records..….Our resume is thick, now all I gotta do is the footwork………..To make big moves you gotta take big chances and that’s where Im at right now……
(7) Who ya like workin wit the best outta LowDown?
Ah shit you tryin to break us up too…….Just playin mane……Well I’ve known all the members in LowDown as friends for years and all our kids are growin up together you know…..I’ll put it like this……Every member brought there own unique qualities when they came to Low Down so its hard to pick………They teach me shit all the time and don’t even know it………I got much love for everyone of them…………I still didn’t answer your question, spensa………..
(8) How do you feel about the situation that Dyno is going thru and how do you think that will affect Northern Califas rap?
I feel for the homeboy and I cant even say I know how he feels since I havent gone thru that situation but I do know that he has a family and kids and I think to me that’s the worse thing for Dyno cause I know he cares about his kids a lot……..As far as what it will do for Northern Califaz rap, it will only continue to grow……..Everyday theres a new Norteno rapper or a new group and I have to say Sir Dyno definitely goez down as one of the pioneerz………As much as they want to stop all this, its only music and it will only continue……….
(9) Will there ever be another G.U.N. album as alotta gente are askin n wonderin about?
I havent heard of another one but if there is we’ll be up on it……The first one opened a lot of doors and united a lot of good gente in a lot of cities……I still bump it…….I heard the originals go for about $40 wrapped up……That’s some shit huh…….A classic ****
(10) If you had a chance to work with any 3 rap artists who would they be and why?
Let me see………2Pac definitely for the songz he brought us and the onez he continues to come out with…….I learned a lot from him as far as rhyme patterns and songwriting and It would have been a dream come true…….Then theres Too$hort……that muthafucka is sick and came into this rap game for the long run…….And last…….probably Jay-Z so I could do a video with him and while we are filming Im gonna just start chokin the shit out of him like a muthafuckin savage and then after he wakes up Im gonna just start smashin on em…….Fuck him and the whole East Coast for all they’ve done to hold us back over here…….
