Police nab suspected cop killer
By Ricci Graham - STAFF WRITER

DALY CITY - Acting on a tip from the suspect's relatives, Daly City police on Tuesday afternoon stormed an apartment complex and arrested a 23-year-old Newark man authorities believe shot and killed a San Leandro officer Monday night.
Between 75 and 100 officers - including members of a SWAT team - surrounded a unit at the Edgeview Terrace Apartments at 406 88th Street and, after tossing a flash-bang bomb into the apartment, took Irving ``Gotti'' Ramirez into custody without further incident.

Authorities said Ramirez - who earlier had been named as a suspect in the fatal shooting of San Leandro police Officer Nels ``Dan'' Niemi in a quiet community in the western edge of the city late Monday night - was asleep by himself inside the apartment when police arrived.

San Leandro Police Lt. Marc DeCoulode said Ramirez was to be taken to San Leandro Tuesday evening and taken into custody in connection with the shooting that rattled this usually quiet community.

``Dan was a caring and dedicated individual,'' San Leandro Police Chief Joe Kitchen said of Neimi at a news conference held before the arrest Tuesday afternoon. ``When you close your eyes and think of your best friend in the seventh grade ... that's Dan Niemi. He was just a very quiet, all-around nice guy.

``This is a terrible, terrible day in the city,'' Kitchen added. Niemi, 42, a former computer network administrator who joined the department three years ago, was shot and killed in what police called ``an unprovoked attack'' while responding to a routine disturbance call just before 11 p.m. Monday.

Kitchen said Niemi had gone to the 14700 block of Doolittle Drive to investigate a report of loud noise and loitering involving a group of juveniles and was talking to a group of three people who live in the area when a white 1995 Ford Thunderbird pulled alongside the officer. Kitchen said one of the two people inside the Thurderbird got out of the car and began a ``casual conversation'' with Niemi, who was outside his patrol car and standing on the sidewalk.

For reasons yet unknown, Lt. Marc DeCoulode said, the man opened fire on Niemi, striking the officer several times at close range. ``There was no indication that it would turn into a violent assault,'' DeCoulode said. By Monday morning, police had identified Ramirez as the suspected gunman and a manhunt ensued the ended in Daly City.

Niemi, who was married and had a 6-year-old daughter and 13-year-old stepson, was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he was pronounced dead at 11:38 p.m.

``It appeared officer Niemi was the intended victim,'' DeCoulode said. ``It was an unprovoked attack.''

Kitchen said he met with Niemi's wife and parents at the hospital around 3 a.m. Tuesday and informed them of the officer's death. ``That was the most gut-wenching period of my career, of my life,'' Kitchen said. DeCoulode said the Thunderbird was found abandoned a short distance away from the shooting scene on Doolittle Drive at Belvedere Avenue, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.

Residents who were in the area initially fled after hearing the crackle of gunfire, but DeCoulode said they returned and identified

Is it wrong to ruin families and destroy lives? Is it wrong to persecute someone who has sworn to protect and serve.

Honestly, What kind of society do you think we would have without any police??

Yep.

Um, take TO PROTECT AND SERVE out of that statement if you're referring to the law enforcement of Amerika. The police have NOTHING to do with protecting and serving the Amerikan people. This has been proven time and time again throughout the history of the police force. They have never protected and served the people, the only serve and protect the ruling elite. This is why it is the police who have been the ones called to assassinate political leaders, fire upon protesters/strikers, harass the poor and people of color, etc. etc. etc.

Honestly, What kind of society do you think we would have without any police??
Depends on what kind of society you're speaking about: A police force ran by the people that consists of people from the community would be an effective and fair way to police communities, not a police force that is trained to use aggression/racism and is controlled by dirty politicians and the rich elite.

Individually, the man could have been a good person, and if that’s the case, that sucks for his family and friends, but regardless, he was apart of an oppressive organization and by that involvement that makes him an oppressive person.

That’s why you’ll see no sympathy from 2-0-Sixx when a cop is shot. Think of it this way, if you hear on the news that a soldier from the Taliban was shot and killed today, chances are, you’re not thinking “damn, he probably had a wife and kids, ah man, this is horrible!!”, nah, you don’t think nothing of it because likely you don’t like the Taliban and you oppose them. But in truth, who knows, maybe this man was a decent and good man. Same principles apply here, the police force is an oppressive organization that represents racism, murder, rape, harassment, greed, corruption, etc. etc. It’s something I oppose and quite frankly, it’s something most all of you should oppose.

206 has some valid points.

for some reason people act like the lives of policemen are more valuable than everybody elses. just like 206 said, it's part of the job...like firefighters gettin' burned, or cooks for that matter. you know what you're gettin' into when you sign up for a job. I feel dana on the kid situation, but police didn't think twice about killin' that 19 month old and her father...granted she was in her father's arms when they opened fire, but what happened to "sharpshooters"WTF 100 policemen to pick up one dude...who just happened to be asleep at the time...these mother fuckers be overdoin' it. you kill one of them, and they adopt gang styles..and get the homies together to go and ride on the guy that killed their potna...they are hypocrates

Dayum, his own family turned him in???

I agree with most of the points made in this thread, the pigs are an oppressive organization and I hate what they represent. Some foos might be decent people, and maybe they THINK they're helping or protecting their community. However, if shit goes down those people are almost ALWAYS gonna protect their fellow pigs who might have murdered, raped, beat etc etc a citizen. What does that make them? However, something like this happens to one of their own, and the pigs go buck wild. I feel bad for dude's family, but he shouldn't have been a pig. Nobody really knows why homie killed that pig anyway, so Ima just leave it at that.

but on another note, what is this shit now? they sent the entire DCPD force just to catch this man... i think a simple fleet of 2 or 3 squad cars would've suited this case just fine.

but 75-100 officers plus the SWAT team armed with fully automatic rifles?? what the fuck, was osama in that apartment building with him or something?
