Let's make this vital and add to it...
i'm going to name the product, and the price range, it's up to you to go dig the reviews out off Google.com , but trust me there's a bunch of reviews on these items
I've done tons of research on these items, so hoepfully it can help you like it helped me....one thing i'm not going to give a list of is production equipment...lol producers secrets...

Mic Pre Amps...
Aphex 207...great tube pre
$450 range

FMR AUDIO RNP aka Real Nice Preamp
supposed to be better then preamps costing 5 times as much
$450 range

Presonus MP20
these are supposed to be some nice preamps, they sell alone for $499 but at Guitar Center, they have a deal right now where for another $100 you get a $300 Mic from Groove Tubes the GT55, which is a lot better then it's price tag says

Monitors
TR5-N-Tuned Monitors from Event
$300 a pair, real steal

M-Audio Sp-5B
$200 a pair...step down from the Tr5, but still great for the price

Compressors...
i'm only going to name one, trust me and pick this over anything below a G, and even then maybe don't pick anything over this
FMR AUDIO RNC...aka real nice compressor
$175 from Mercenary Music(they sell it, on ebay as well as their own site, )-just get this folks, no matter what you have already, THIS SHOULD BE THE NEXT PIECE OF EQUIP YOU BUY...i know it's mine

Microphones...MY FAVORITE SUBJECT
this is a tricky part, but i'll give some good suggestions on mics you should definately look into

Groove Tubes models GT55 and GT66, exclusively available at Guitar Center stores, (however you can get the 56 and 67 from other places...though hard to find in the US right now)

the GT55 runs about $300-400 range don't let the price fool you, this is dope, it's a solid state, while the GT66 is a Tube Mic $400-600 range....

Blue Baby Bottle...Great Mic...i own one myself, anyone looking to get great Mid-Hi's and Hi's , this mic is for you...$500 range

Blue Ball...this is a solid state they debuted at Namm...$280 dollar MSRP so it'll prolly be cheap, and knowing blue it will be a damn good mic

Studio Projects C1...
$300???...
anyway,, people are comparing it to the U87(which is highly unlikely and a bit strange) but it's efinately a great mic for it's price range, definately check it out

let's hear some more

The FMR RNP and RNC are the best buys right now in pro audio period. I've read nothing but great things about them, on every music message board I go to. There sight even tells you what is bad about there products. I cant think of anybody who does that.
FMR Audio

Mics.

1.) Audio Technica 4033 or 4040 $300. The 4033 is dicontinued though. The 4033 is a medium sized condensor the 4040 is a large sized condensor. I have a 4033, great mic for female's!!!!!!!!!! and even better on acustic guitar. A must have. They tend to be a little brighter sounding and have a little more sibliance problem than some mics, but bottem line they sound top notch and that is what matters.

2.) Rode NTK $500. Again like FMR one of the best mic buys period. It's been compared to mic's 3 to 4 times it's price. It's main purpose is male vocals, but can be used on what ever. The studio I go to over here to learn uses it on his kick drum, sounds very nice and full. The reason the NTK is lower in price is because it has no Pad or filters.

About the Studio Projects, I've heard that the C3 sounds like a U87, not completley but close, not the C1.

Mic Pre's

1.) Great River ME-1NV $1000. Single channle Neve 1073 clone, well almost. Neve is a very colored sound. The ME-1NV, is a slightley toned down, making it less colored and DAMN DOES IT SOUND GOOD. This unit gets nothing but praise every where you go and read or hear about it. A MUST HAVE PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!
Great River ME-1NV

2.) Summit Audio 2BA-221 $500-600. If you dont know about summit ( most people dont ) they have been around for years and are one the best little compines out there. I've read good things about this unit.
Summit Audio

A/D D/A Converters

While Apogee is considered the cream of the crop ( except maybe prizm which run $8000 for 2 channles ) there are other's out there that cost less and still deliver the goods.

1.) Lucid A/D 9624 $750. Same quality as Apogee Rosetta but cost less and is a half rack instead of a full rack like the rosetta. Highley recommended.
Lucid

I'll add more later............

also include for Preamps

Grace101...i haven't used this, but it's around $500 for a single channel(most rap projects don't need more then one in my opinion)

Budget Equipment Motif um..............

Yeah I Know I listed the Graet River @ a G but for the price its just about as good as it gets ( Gotta add a VIPRE, GML, D.W. FEARN, Chandler Limited to that list too :classic: )

@KP

1.) Emu MP7 - Bout $700 / Cant beat it for the price, especially if this is your 1st peace of gear. 6 analog out, S/Pdif, 3 more Rom expansion slots, and almost 10 roms to chose from.

2.) Roland MC-307 - Bout $500 / The 307 uses the Roland JV sound engine which is a studio standard. The pattern sequencer on here is worthless unless your patterns are very basic ( if there to complex it will hick-up ) the real time is very effective with a little practice. 2 of my folkz have this and damn you should here the beats that come from this. I will have audio up in about a month or so.

Also Check EBAY. Older gear works great also. Roland XP-60/80, Ensoniq ASR-10, Korg Trinity.

@KP again I got your PM but my reply was to long, what is your email???????? I'll send it to you that way or hit me @ [email protected]

For sound modules, try a Roland jv1010. They can be had for under $300 and have all the sounds of the jv2080 plus the session expansion board.

Mic: Studio Projects C1. It's actually only $200 new

For a full featured synth, check out a used Kurzweil K2000. You can get them for abou $500 and they have the most advanced editing features of any pcm synth (besides other kurzweil's). Great bargain.

For music composition, I suggest that people head the software route. You can build a serious pc for $450. Throw in a 8in/out soundcard with some acceptable preamps for $400. I recomend Cubase VST for making beats or recording. Combine that with the multitude of incredible vst instruments and you'll have a software combination that will blow the pants off any hardware.

More Pre amps.....

1.) M-Audio Tampa - $600 or so. This is a solid state pre amp with, an opto compressor with S/Pdif as standard. The tampa was desinged by the guy who makes groove tubes, M-audio simpley contracted him out. The Tampa uses some form of tube modeling to get that vintage sound. Tube warmth is actuall distortion in the mid range freq. Tampa try's to up this one by having the tube modeling cover a broader range of freq, therefore having more of that sweet spot, so to speak.

2.) Drawmer TS-1 - Bout $600-700. Tube pre amp with a STEREO COMPRESSOR. Quite Pre amp, also has tube drive function, so you can control the amount of tube sound in the mix. And the big bonus, is that since it has a stereo comp, you can put that on your final mix buss, it give it true tube warmth, intstead of just using plug ins that modle tube warmth. Digital out put option bout $300.

go with fruty loops studio express ($49)
download cool edit from one of those freeware sites
go to radioshack pick up a cheap mic ($20) and then hit up the pawn shop for old blues, rnb and rock cds.....there u go a studio for under a hundred bills.
