With half of 2015 nearly in the books, the biggest news story dominating the headlines is the rift between Lil Wayne and former mentor Birdman. After nearly 20 years of being on the roster of Cash Money Records, Weezy has not only publicly revealed that he is unhappy with his situation but went as far as to sue the label for $51 Million in owed funds and demanding to be released from his contract. With his highly anticipated Carter V album in rap purgatory, Wayne revealed that he will be releasing a free project appropriately titled The Free Weezy Album.
With no news of any resolution to his legal dispute with Cash Money Records, Lil Wayne took the stage at the Bay Area’s KMEL Summer Jam last night and announced that “I just signed a deal with my motherf**king idol, Jay Z”. The audience responded with resounding cheers, but Wayne did not elaborate on the matter. This of course leaves fans scratching their heads. Could he be referring to his recent investment in Jay Z‘s streaming service TIDAL, or is he now a member of the Roc Nation roster? That of course would be quite odd considering that Wayne is still technically an artist on Cash Money Records. Perhaps this could mean that he is now being managed by Roc Nation. All of that remains to be seen.
During a radio interview in 2013, Jay Z revealed that during his tenure as President of Def Jam, he had attempted to sign Wayne to hip-hop’s flagship label and was met with a Birdman’s lawyers, preventing that from ever happening. Check out the clip above.
