SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—Kurt Warner is being courted by an eager division rival of the Arizona Cardinals.

The San Francisco 49ers sent a private jet Monday for the two-time MVP quarterback, who traveled from Phoenix to the team’s training complex for a physical exam and a meeting with top brass.

Warner led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl last season, but became a free agent when he didn’t re-sign with the club. Arizona has offered a two-year, $20 million contract to Warner, who will be 38 years old when training camp opens.

But Warner is seeking a deal worth at least $14 million per season, and the former St. Louis Rams star seems willing to leave Arizona for the right offer.

NFC West rival San Francisco, which finished two games behind the Cardinals in second place last season, has enough salary cap room to accommodate his salary wishes. With no established starting quarterback on the 49ers’ roster, the club has rolled out its red-and-gold carpet to entice Warner.

After flying into Silicon Valley, Warner arrived at the 49ers’ training complex by limousine shortly before lunchtime with his wife, Brenda. He was scheduled for a typical free-agent examination and a lunch meeting with general manager Scot McCloughan, coach Mike Singletary and likely owner Jed York before flying home Monday night.

Singletary has been unwilling to designate veteran Shaun Hill as his starter for next season even after Hill led San Francisco to five wins in its final seven games and a 7-9 record that knocked the interim tag off Singletary’s title.

Alex Smith, the injury-plagued former No. 1 draft pick, is working on restructuring his contract to stay with the 49ers, who will release him if they can’t reach a deal with a much lower base salary than the $9 million in his current contract.

The 49ers might not be the ideal fit for Warner, who would leave a lineup with star receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin to join a run-based offense with no proven pass-catchers—although Warner’s arrival might persuade longtime Rams teammate Isaac Bruce to put off retirement for another season.

The 49ers announced one signing Monday, bringing back fullback Moran Norris with a three-year contract after releasing the burly run-blocker last summer. He spent last season with the 0-16 Detroit Lions, starting eight games.

Norris, an eight-year NFL veteran, played for the 49ers from 2006-07. He was the lead blocker for Frank Gore when the running back led the NFC in rushing with 1,695 yards in 2006, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl.

UPDATED with exclusive Warner interview.

* * *

The Kurt Warner Watch continues at 4949 Centennial Boulevard in Santa Clara, site of the 49ers' team offices.

Warner is apparently getting a physical at Stanford. His agent says there will be no decision coming today.

"Nothing is going to happen tonight," said Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent. "He's going to have to sit down and talk to his wife and me. We'll get through today and figure out what to do from there."

Now, it's back outside to stake out the gate, where Warner might re-enter the team's offices

UPDATE (4:06 p.m.) Warner arrived back here at the 49ers' team offices. He was driven by 49ers head athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson.

As they rolled up to the back gate, I ran alongside and motioned for Warner to roll down the passenger-side window. He mouthed, "I'm not talking." Or something that looks a whole like those words when said silently.

Through the fence, I could see Warner on the cell phone walking back into the building. He is wearing a peach-colored shirt and designer blue jeans.

damn the niners already taking him to the hospital for a physical, wtf?

San Fran would NOT be a good fit for him. And I dont think he will sign with them. I expect AZ to counter any offer. Id say pay him whatever he wants as long as its below 15 per season

all i got to say is wow, seemed like a more a negotiation tactic for Warner with the Rams. i honestly dont know why the Niners would make him the starter though

NFL Network reports that the Cardinals have increased their contract offer to free agent Kurt Warner from $20 million to $23 million over two years.
Warner's Monday trip to San Francisco has GM Rod Graves worried. The new offer isn't what Warner wants, but shows Graves is willing to budge despite ESPN's report to the contrary. The 49ers did let Warner leave, meaning the proposal didn't blow him out of the water. Warner is probably going to re-sign. Mar. 2 - 11:41 pm et

Yeah...that's not even funny to joke like that with signing Warner. Everywhere Warner has done well, it's been with at least two great WR's.

You look at STL, he had a YOUNGer Bruce and Torry Holt, in Arizona where he didn't do well the ENTIRE time, he had arguably the best WR duo in the league with Fitz and Boldin.

He would be an absolute waste of the Niners time because...

1. We don't have WR's like Fitz and Boldin
2. Our O-Line would not protect him well enough
3. He's not worth the money that he's asking for.
