Rap pioneer KRS-One, who built his reputation on fiercely political music, is taking heat for comments he recently made about September 11.

Thursday's Rush & Molloy gossip column in the New York Daily News alleged that "the hip-hop anarchist has declared his solidarity with Al Qaeda by asserting that he and other African-Americans 'cheered when 9-11 happened,' " and said that KRS's words "defiled the memory of those who died in the terrorist attacks."

KRS-One's comments came during an October 2 discussion panel at The New Yorker Festival. He ignited heated reactions when he stated that security guards at the Twin Towers did not let blacks enter because of their manner of speech and dress, and that because of that discrimination, "when the planes hit the building, we were like, 'Mmmm ... justice.' "

The often controversial rapper (see "KRS-One On Nelly: 'I Can Slap Him Around For Days' ") also said he felt that voting adds to society's corruption and that "America has to commit suicide if the world is to be a better place." The statement incited former Nirvana member Krist Novoselic — also on the panel — to shout in response: "That is wrong, man. Suicide is not the answer."

In response to the Daily News story, KRS released a statement on Thursday to explain his words.

"Like everyone," he wrote, "I was shocked to read that I and other African-Americans actually 'cheered when 9-11 happened,' and that I have 'declared my solidarity with Al Qaeda.'

"I would never just say something as crazy as 'we cheered when 9-11 happened'!" he continued. "I was making an objective point about how many hip-hoppas as well as the oppressed peoples of the world felt that day."

The rapper said that when he was asked why hip-hop has not "engaged the current situation more [meaning 9-11], my response was 'because it does not affect us, or at least we don't perceive that it affects us. September 11 happened to them.' I went on to say that 'I am speaking for the culture now; I am not speaking my personal opinion.' "

KRS said that after he stated that the hip-hop community's response to the attacks was "Mmmm ... justice," he had hoped to say, "Now of course, a lot of our friends and family were lost there as well," but was interrupted.

In the lengthy statement, KRS went on to explain that his words were taken out of context and that some of what he said may have been misunderstood because "I am a poet and I speak poetically."

With regard to his statement about America committing suicide in order for the world to become a better place, KRS explained: "If you want to go beyond voting, American interests must put a gun to its head and commit suicide, because as long as we are only interested in American interests, we go out and invade the rest of the world."

Though he was saddened by 9-11, the rapper said, he and many members of his community who were "racially profiled and harassed by the World Trade Center's security" felt a "sense of justice, a sense of change, a wake-up call watching the Twin Towers fall."

"For the record," the rapper said, concluding his statement, "I am an American philosopher. I speak and seek truth." KRS apologized "if the slander that the Daily News has printed regarding my political views has offended anyone in any way."

"However," he added, "we do have a voice and a point of view, and if you are not prepared to hear what hip-hop has to say about its view of world events, then don't ask!"

He is not "Hip Hop" and definitely not the voice of "Hip Hop" so for him to say something like that is just ridiculous! That's his point of view and nothing else because like someone said before me I bet the African Americans that were inside the Towers weren't thinking "hmmmmm justice" and I'm pretty sure their families weren't thinking that! I can't believe this guy and to think some people actually do think of him as the voice for Hip Hop.

KRS Responds To Media Accusations

Veteran rapper KRS-One has issued another statement to address the backlash concerning his comments regarding the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States.

Despite a widely read rebuttal to his comments he made during a panel on politics for the New Yorker magazine, outlets nationwide have re-published portions of the rapper’s comments, labeling him “pro-Al Qaeda.”

“Let me be clear and we can refer to the audiotape. At NO POINT during the panel discussion did I EVER declare solidarity with Al Qaeda and for the Daily News to print that is not only irresponsible…it’s dangerous!” KRS told AllHipHop.com in a new statement.

For the second time, the rapper emphasized that media outlets were taking his statements out of context. He said he did not mean to disrespect any person or persons lost or people who have lost loved ones in the tragic attacks.

“I apologize to anyone I may have offended,” KRS said. “It was a terrible tragedy, which still hurts many of us. My point was that we’ve been bombing other people’s “world trade centers” for many years, and 9/11 could have been a repercussion of that fact. It should have been a wake up call!”

Instead of focusing on what actually happened that day, the rapper said more people need to examine why the event happened in the first place.

“The towers were chosen because they represented the financial pockets of white America,” he said. “I DO NOT believe in killing innocent people for any reason, I do NOT appreciate what happened on 9/11, but I also don’t appreciate the hundreds of thousands of women and children who sit in hospitals or graves in Iraq, Baghdad, Fallujah, and other cities in the Middle East and around the world because of the bombs that Americans dropped on them in an attempt to kill "terrorists". Is that anti American?”

In addition to his groundbreaking work with the Stop the Violence Movement, which released the classic Hip-Hop single, “Self Destruction,” KRS also spearheaded H.E.A.L (Human Education Against Lives) and more recently, The Temple of Hip-Hop.

KRS said that he has been traveling the United States on tour, where he finds many young people from all walks of life that support his opinions on the war and United States' foreign policies.

“Marines, Israelis, Palestinians, army soldiers, Muslims, Black Americans, White Americans, all find their expression in hip hop, and express full support.” KRS said. “THEY, the Hip-hop community, didn’t take my words out of context, because THEY understand how corrupted our society has become and that it’s time to speak out. Right now, there are troops willing to risk court marshal because they are refusing to fight since they have seen first hand the atrocities of this war.”

KRS also shot back at the Daily News’ report that he did not support the voter registration drives that such luminaries as Russell Simmons, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Dame Dash and others have staged.

“I think all Hiphoppers should register to vote, this is why I commend the work of Citizen Change and the Hip Hop Action Network,” KRS clarified. “I highly commend Russell Simmons and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs for the work they are doing. The reason I think they should register [voters], is so that we can depend on a high voter turnout when we do in fact find someone who represents us.”

And finally, he addressed the Daily News’ comments that his career in the entertainment industry was on a “downward spiral.”

“I am preparing to release my forthcoming book, 'The Gospel of Hiphop'', as well as a paperback version of my previous highly acclaimed book, 'Ruminations' hitting stores next month,” he revealed.

In addition to next year’s 8th Annual Hiphop Appreciation Week (May 15th – 22nd 2005) and its theme “Freedom”, the rapper will participate in the “World Hip-Hop Summit,” which takes place in Paris, France in April.

as usual, the media continues to put people like krs's words out of context. i agree with krs when he said that 9-11 happened for a reason. and as an african american i can clearly say that the bombing of the twin towers did not affect me in the sense that i'm afraid of terroristic plots on our country. i'm more worried about the terrorism thats going on in my neighborhood by crooked cops. not only that but i, and plenty of others, gotta worry about not getting shot, stabbed or beatup when we go out in public. so as you can see, i was never a supporter of the so-called "war on terrorism".

I was not shocked by the events of 9-11. I already knew america would be attacked. BTW KRS is not the enemy here. George bush jr is the enemy, the controlled media is the enemy, crooked cops are the enemies, those who seek to limit our rights (lol@rights) are the enemies......

May God bless Osama bin laden...an innocent man who is being hunted down without cause.....
