OAKLAND, Calif. (CBS) ―
Film producer and director Kevin Smith was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to Los Angeles after crew members determined that he was too overweight and insisted he would have to purchase two seats instead of one in order to fly.
Smith made the accusation in a posting on his Twitter account on Saturday evening.
Smith tweeted: Dear @SouthwestAir - I know I'm fat, but was Captain Leysath (sic) really justified in throwing me off a flight for which I was already seated?
A Southwest spokesperson at Oakland International Airport confirmed the incident to CBS station KPIX-TV in San Francisco and said the airline was in contact with Smith.
The spokesperson indicated that Southwest flight crews are empowered to make the determination as to whether a passenger can be required to purchase two seats.
Smith later tweeted that he was allowed to board another Southwest flight without a problem. It wasn't clear whether he had to buy a second seat.
Smith tweeted: Dear @SouthwestAir, I'm on another one of your planes, safely seated & buckled-in again, waiting to be dragged off in front of the normies. ... And, hey? @SouthwestAir? I didn't even need a seat belt extender to buckle up. Somehow, that **** fit over my "safety concern"-creating gut.
Smiths directing credits include the movies "Clerks," "Dogma," "Chasing Amy" and "Zack and Miri Make a Porno."
