Possible fight of the year......
No other weight class is as remotely exciting as the Welterweight division. Unification bout between Williams/Cintron, winner could likely fight winner of Cotto/Mosely and/or Mayweather.

Kermit Cintron-Paul Williams Deal is Reached

By Mark Vester

After weeks of trash talking between the fighters and negotiations between the promoters, an agreement has been reached for a welterweight unification bout between WBO champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs) and IBF counterpart Kermit Cintron (28-1, 26 KOs). As previously reported, the fight will take place in the main event slot of an HBO televised card on February 2.

Dan Rafael reports that the only obstacle is Cintron's Nov. 23 title defense against Jesse Feliciano (15-5-3, 9 KOs), taking place on the undercard to the Fernando Vargas-Ricardo Mayorga pay-per-view. Obviously Cintron has to win to keep the Williams fight alive.

Undefeated heavyweight Cristobal Arreola (22-0, 20 KOs) is still a possibility to appear in the co-feature. Goossen Tutor was interested in matching him with Travis Walker (25-1-1, 19 KOs), which probably won't happen since Walker was recently upset by little-known TJ Wilson in 15-seconds of the first round.

Williams is coming off an impressive title-winning decision win over Antonio Margarito in July, the same man who handed Cintron the only loss of his career, by way of a fifth-round knockout, in 2005.

awww snatched my thread but then again i wont cry cuz its 206

Im goin w/ Cintron. He's more athletic than margarito and i think he'll find a way around those long jabs. I gotta say Cintron by KO. I wanna give Paul some props, so i dont think it will be a blow out. I think its gonna be 1 of those kinda back n forth but Cintron will catch him.

here's my big IF

If Paul Williams comes out with some fire and actually sits down on his punches and throws in combos ill go w/ Williams by decision. I always have an IF b/c u can never guess the temperment of the fighter until u see the mf the night of the fight. In boxing having an off night can kill ur career unlike most other sports where u have 10s of other nights to restore ur image

ahh my bad homie, I should have searched first.

I agree, I got Cintron by KO. I can see the fight going to the later rounds, 10-11, before Cintron finally catches him.

I think Paul will out-work Cintron, as far as output goes. I can see Paul doing the same type of thing he did against Margarito - 100 punches per round. But just like the Margarito fight, Paul will lose a bit of steam as the fight goes on, and again just like against Margarito, he will get rocked a couple times in the later rounds, the difference though is that I think Cintron will have enough power, accuracy and killer instinct to lay him out completely.

I agree about the unique circumstances fighters have in regards to having an off night. People rarely ever take that into account when discussing past fights. Roberto Duran actually once said the day he fought Sugar Ray for the 2nd time, he ate hella burritos or some shit and had the runs really bad and his stomach was fucked up. LOL. During the fight he just felt like crap and wasn't into the fight thus "no mas." No way to know what really happened that day but I can imagine trying to go 12 rounds while having the runs!!!

Ehhhh i dunno about that 1. Duran seems like a mf that doesnt take a loss that well.. but yeah its all bad 4 a boxer w/ a lil sudden injury or illness. But sheit let a NFL'er or NBA'er have a big toe injury or a wrist sprain and they are questionable 4 the game

Oh I doubt it as well...Duran has made like 214 different excuses as to what happened that day.

I've only watched Williams fight once, but was very impressed with the way he was able to control the fight with Margarito. The logical prediction is to pick him over Cintron, who was absolutely destroyed by Margarito...

With that said, styles make fights, and I'll predict Cintron to win a close decision.

although i would love for somebody to flatten williams, i think he will be able to take cintron's punches and win a UD. he has incredible conditioning and punch output through constant pressure, which is something that bothered cintron against margarito.

the fight that interests me the most this year is between calzaghe and kessler -most important fight imo.

nah. its 1 of the most important, but if Pavlik can retain his titls against JT then he should go on to fight the winner of this weeks fight. THAT would be somethin boxing hasnt seen @ this weight in a while

true, except i said 'this year'. calzaghe and kessler could be too much to handle for pavlik, even though i enjoyed his recent performances a lot. it's definitely something that must happen in the near future.

Williams Bout is Off, Injury Sidelines Cintron

Editor's Note: Cintron had a tentative unification bout with WBO champion Paul Williams scheduled for Feb. 2. Williams will now have to find another opponent for the HBO televised card.

TOTOWA, NJ – IBF Welterweight Champion Kermit Cintron suffered severe ligament damage to his right hand in his successful Nov 23 title defense against Jesse Feliciano, it was announced today by Main Events CEO Kathy Duva. Reading, PA orthopedic surgeon Dr. R. Scott Cook has advised Kermit that he should not engage in any boxing matches until March 1.

Cintron (29-1, 27 KO’s) injured his right hand in the first round of his Nov 23 bout against Feliciano. Despite the intense pain—which Cintron made evident when he dropped to the canvas following the bout—the champion battled on for 10 rounds before stopping the granite-chinned Feliciano with a two-fisted barrage at the 1:53 mark of round 10.

“I’m disappointed that I injured my hand, but I’m going to do whatever the doctor says because I’m eager to get back into the ring and unify the welterweight title,” said Cintron.

“Kermit will take the time necessary to heal his hand,” said Duva. “We will not run the risk of him entering the ring and injuring his hand further.”

I read Cotto was trying to land a fight with Clottey in March, but now that Williams is available, and since both were scheduling a fight only a month apart, I don't see why Cotto wouldn't take the opportunity to fight Williams. Bigger name, bigger paycheck, bigger reward.
