K.I.S.S.

When most people see this word in a blog related to entertainment the first thing that will come to mind is the iconic rock group who revolutionized marketing and merchandising in music. This blog however is about breaking down K.I.S.S. Or how my first marketing teacher put it "keep it simple stupid.”
In marketing there is nothing more important then keeping your campaigns basic but effective. Nike, Coca Cola, Apple, Myspace.com and most of the major corporations all employ this ideal. Nike has had the simple swoosh logo for years and it us one of the most recognizable logos in the world. While Pepsi is constantly changing its designs Coca Cola has stayed true to its roots with its simple cursive logo over a solid red color.
In entertainment we can all take a page from the major corporations marketing strategies and realize that basic is better, instead of having an advertisement that looks like a three ring circus, create something that will draw your consumer’s eye to what you are selling instead of away from it. Learn the color scales and use it in your advertising for the most effective marketing. Some colors blend together and some when layered on top of others will pop and grab your consumer’s eye. One of my favorite tricks is to have stickers made with a black sticker and then white text, because the white text pops off of the black it makes whatever message I'm conveying that much more powerful. This is a very simple but effective way of grabbing attention as well as affordable.
I touched on this in the previous paragraph when I spoke about Coca Cola and Nike’s logos, but it is so important and seems to be overlooked in entertainment. Your logo is your identity and it is one of the most important assets you will have made for your company. A great logo doesn’t have to be over the top and flashy, some of the most famous logos are the complete opposite of that. For example Universal Pictures uses a simple Globe with the text “Universal” under it, Sean John Clothing has a basic signature logo and Mcdonalds uses the now famous giant “M” or the golden arches which are seen in all of their advertisements. When it comes time to choosing a company or even individual logo for yourself remember that this piece of art will represent you and your company for years to come and a strong basic logo will stand the tests of time.
Every day our consumer base is bombarded with advertisements and being sold products they don't need making it even more important to break away from the pack with effective advertising. As independent business people it is so important that we take advantage of the day to day control we have over our campaigns to create simple but effective marketing that will compete because it is that perfect combination of simplicity and effectiveness.
