FEG and Pro Elite today held a press conference for tomorrow’s Dynamite! USA event at the L.A. Coliseum. Along with introducing the fighters that are scheduled to participate, FEG, K-1’s parent company, brought in special guest and NBA veteran Dennis Rodman.
While Rodman is currently in town to help promote this weekend’s event, it appears that there may actually be more to it than that. According to K-1 officials there is interest on both their and Rodman’s sides in having Rodman possibly purchase K-1 Hero’s USA, the American arm of K-1’s mixed martial arts brand.
Rodman is an obvious attempt to gain attention for the promotion’s struggling attempt to gain a foothold in the United States, saying at the press conference, “K-1 is the ultimate fighting of fighting,” obviously a statement playing off of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s popularity.
K-1 also said that there is interest in having Rodman fight for the promotion, possibly as early as September.
In less speculative news, K-1 announced the signing of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion Marcelo Garcia. Regarded as one of the best grapplers in the world today, Garcia will make his mixed martial arts debut fighting for the promotion on their September 17th card.
