I just got Fruity Loops producer edition 7. I want to how you guys learned the program and ultimately how you learned to make beats. I want to know what VSTs and Loop kits to use. But the most important thing I want to know is how to use fruity loops. Any suggestions on books, videos, etc.
I've never really dabbled in anything besides pro tools in my audio editing class.
Cliff notes: How the fuck do I learn the basics on how to make a beat using fruity loops.
Goal: Make some soulful beats (soul supreme, 9th wonder, etc). Not getting into it to make money or anything, just something to fuck with.
You just got to fuck with it yo. There's not much to it. You might want to start off by using the Step Sequencer to make your drum beat loops since it's the most visual. Then use the Piano Roll for creating melodies for instruments such as piano, basslines, guitar, synth leads,etc...
Basically everything you do in FL should be split into invidual Patterns for the final rearranging within the PlayList. For example, put your first drumloop on PAT1, second variation of the drumloop on PAT2 (like if you added in an extra snare hit or two,...), Bassline on PAT3, Piano on PAT4, strings on PAT5,etc..etc... I do this because it creates organization and that way you can easily mix them together in the PlayList, as you can remove or add in elements of your song at your will depending on how you want your song structure to be. However, before splitting each element into their invidual PAT (Pattern), what I usually do first is build the majority of the song in 1 PAT section, then at the end, I split everything into PAT1 and so on. I just think it makes it easier to have everything in one Pattern first, that way you can hear how it all sounds together and just use the mute button to mute certain elements out. Then alls you have to do is use the Cut & Paste feature for each element and paste them into their own Patterns. So lets say I built the entire beat in PAT1 first, I will probably leave the drumloop in PAT1, then for the rest of the sounds, I'll Cut those out of PAT1 and paste them into their own individual Patterns starting from PAT2 and so on. So that's pretty much how I use it as far as building up a song.
As far as VSTs go, there's plenty out there. I suggest using the search button, there's plenty of topics regarding this. Also check out kvraudio.com And as far as samples go, I don't recommend using the built-in samples, their really weak.
