Special panel says there is no other way to improve poor prison conditions

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A special panel of federal judges has tentatively ruled that California must release tens of thousands of inmates to relieve overcrowding.

The judges say no other solution will improve conditions so poor that inmates die regularly of suicides or lack of proper care.

They say the state can cut the population of its 33 adult prisons through changes in parole and other policies without endangering public safety.

The three judges said a final population figure would be set later.

In Monday's tentative ruling, the judges said they want the state to present a plan to trim the prison population in two to three years.

i bet alot of people with minor drug convictions are gonna get out
And they should, it's a waste of money..

one of my boys got 6 1/2 years for violating his domestic violence probation, all the judge had to do was to send him back to the domestic violence program for a year...

Good, Oregon needs to follow now...Measure 11 had people fucked up for 1st time offenses. Measure 57 & 61 are going to have the same effect as Measure 11. California & Washington both have 3 strike & your out. Oregon will send you up shit creek on your 1st offense...

Your right! I saw folks locked up for some bullshit on their first offense in Oregon. I can't believe people voted for that redneck Mannix's Measure 11. A lot of the same people realized they made a mistake when some of their own family and friends were being locked up on Measure 11 crimes. I met old folks who never committed a fucking crime all their life until one, to 18 year old youngsters that made a stupid mistake. They weren't even violent crimes a lot of the time!

I won't even go into the Cali 3 Strikes bullshit! All I can say is that I limit my trips to Cali, because I have 2 Strikes down there. All it takes is one stupid mistake like being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think Washington might use a little more common sense, because at least you have to commit three major felonies. A Class C won't count as a strike in Washington State. Plus, they give you more good time off your sentence, lol...
