Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry was not amused by President George W. Bush`s joke on Iraq`s missing weapons of mass destruction, scolding the president for taking a "stunningly cavalier attitude" on a serious matter.
Bush made the joke Wednesday at a dinner of US television and radio journalists.
The president displayed a picture of himself down on all fours in his office and told the journalists: "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere!"
"George Bush insulted me as a veteran and as a friend to many still serving in Iraq," Kerry said in a statement released Thursday.
"President George W. Bush showed a stunningly cavalier attitude toward the failed search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the Administrations rush to war," Kerry said.
"If George Bush thinks his deceptive rationale for going to war is a laughing matter, then he`s even more out of touch than we thought," he said. "Unfortunately for the President, this is not a joke."
Kerry and Bush, a Republican, will face off in the November 2 presidential election.
A White House spokesman said Bush focused his remarks on a tribute to the US troops serving in Iraq.
"The president finished his lighter comments on Wednesday night with a very sincere, sober and heartfelt tribute to the men an women who are contributing in all sorts of ways to the effort to not only to free Iraq, but to win the war on terror," Bush spokesman Trent Duffy told AFP.
"The president has made it quite clear that we need to continue to let the Iraqi Survey Group do its work (searching for weapons) and that Saddam represented a threat, and that taking part in freeing 50 million people is absolutely no laughing matter," Duffy said.
