J.J. Redick's mug shot after his DUI arrest.
DURHAM -- Duke All-American basketball player J.J. Redick was arrested Monday night on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officers had a license checkpoint station set up in Durham Monday night at South LaSalle Street and Kangaroo Drive, near Duke Manor.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, officers said a 2005 Toyota SUV approached the checkpoint and then the driver made an illegal U-turn away from the checkpoint.
A police officer followed the Toyota, which then turned into the parking lot of the Belmont Apartments on McQueen Drive.
The driver that got out of the vehicle was J.J. Redick. Redick blew a .11 BAC after he parked his vehicle, and officers then charged him with a DUI and unsafe movement of a vehicle for the illegal U-turn.
There were several passengers in Redick's car, but their names are not known at this time.
Redick has been released on a $1,000 cash bond.
Redick was the Associated Press National Player of the Year, the 2006 selection for the Wooden Award as college basketball's best player, and a two-time ACC Player of the Year selection.
He is Duke's all-time leading scorer and made more 3-pointers in his career than any other Blue Devil. He finished his four-year playing career with 2,769 points and 457 3-pointers.
Redick averaged almost 27 points per game and is expected to be taken in the first round of the 2006 NBA Draft.
Most mock drafts, including this one from NBADraft.net, have Redick going with the 14th selection to the Utah Jazz, but his DUI could drop him out of the NBA Draft lottery.
One Eastern Conference general manager told ESPN.com, "I think that these things hurt anybody's draft status. They do in my eyes. I take these things seriously. That's too bad."
Utah is a Western Conference team, as are Seattle, Houston and Golden State, the four teams Redick has worked out for leading up to the draft.
