“All my life, all through college and wrestling and everything, I never had a serious knee injury,” said a dejected Jens Pulver.
Pulver confirmed the report that surfaced earlier today on Sherdog.com that he had suffered a knee injury while training for his planned September 5th fight for World Extreme Cagefighting.
The knee injury can actually be traced back to the fallout from the recent bout of staph infection that infiltrated the Miletich camp where he trains. “I had staph, so I didn’t get to roll or do anything real physical,” commented Pulver about his early preparations for the planned WEC fight with Cub Swanson.
“Then I started rolling and got my foot caught underneath [my training partner] while doing a guard pass. My leg bent out at the knee and I could feel it pop.”
Needless to say, Pulver is now out of the fight with Swanson. At this point, he has been through and initial medical examination, which left doctors unsure whether it was damage to a ligament or his meniscus.
“The only thing now is an MRI to find out if it’s my ligament or my meniscus,” stated Pulver. Either way, the Miletich fighter is looking at 4 to 8 weeks of recovery time. An MRI is scheduled for later in the week.
The fight with Swanson was to be Pulver’s first WEC fight and his return to the 145-pound featherweight division. He made the move after dropping his last two fights at 155 pounds in the UFC, saying he prefers the lighter weight class.
Now, he is unsure when he will step back in the cage. “I don’t know anything right now,” said Pulver. “I told them I want to fight as soon as possible though.”
A new opponent for Swanson for the September 5th WEC had not been named at the time of publication.
