JAMARCUS RUSSELL COULD PLAY SUNDAY by Michael David Smith

The first pick in this year's NFL draft may finally get on the field on Sunday.

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that rookie quarterback JaMarcus Russell, chosen first overall by the Raiders in April but stuck at third or fourth on the depth chart all season, could be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday and play a few series.

Starter Daunte Culpepper has missed practice this week with a quad injury and is questionable for Sunday. If Culpepper can't go, Josh McCown would start, and Russell might come in off the bench.

"There's a lot of information still to come in," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said, per White. "I don't have an answer for you who's 1-2-3 right now."

The Raiders are at home Sunday against the Broncos. Kiffin has said he would prefer for his rookie to get his first playing time at home.

Raiders' McCown likely to start against Broncos

Daunte Culpepper missed his second consecutive practice Friday. That increases the likelihood of Josh McCown starting Sunday against the Denver Broncos, Coach Lane Kiffin said.

Even so, Kiffin made it clear that a lot can change between now and kickoff. It also bears noting that rookie JaMarcus Russell took some snaps with the first-team offense for the second day in a row and put in extra time after practice.

"There's a lot of information still to come in," Kiffin said. "I don't have an answer for you who's 1-2-3 right now."

McCown, who has an injured pinkie on his non-throwing hand, received the majority of reps with the first-team offense the past two days and is listed as probable on the injury report. Culpepper is listed as questionable as a result of a right quadriceps injury that started bothering him Wednesday, he said.

Culpepper started the past two games and six of Oakland's first 11. McCown has started five games, including the regular-season opener. He said he is excited about the prospect of returning to action.

"I'm pumped to get out there and compete," McCown said. "I'm looking forward to it. It'll be a good opportunity to go out there and play. It's always a great feeling."

Kiffin said he intends to monitor Culpepper's status today and Sunday morning before making a final determination. If Culpepper can't play, Russell would be the No. 2 backup for the first time this season.

u would rather see them play a injured qb instead of a healthy qb? i say give russell a chance let him play if he is just horrible and throwing int after int and incompletions take him out its a good test for him anyways
