Prominent Manhattan jeweler Jacob Arabov was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison and fined $50,000 in federal court in Detroit today for lying to federal agents about the ownership of jewelry seized from a major cocaine trafficker.

Arabov, 42, who pleaded guilty in October to concealing the ownership of jewelry seized from drug suspect Terry Flenory, was facing a possible prison sentence of 37 to 46 months. His sentence is 30 months.
"I feel ashamed that I broke the law of this country that's been so good to me and my family,' Arabov told U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn during sentencing.
Arabov. a Jewish refugee from Uzbekistan, came to the United States as a teenager, entered the jewelry trade and eventually opened Jacob and Co., a prestigious Manhattan jewelry store whose cleients included the Who's Who of the entertainment and fashion world.
Cohn said Arabov must report to prison Jan. 15 and will recommend that he serve in a federal prison facility in Pennsylvania.
The sentence was 7 months lower than the minimum recommended in his plea agreement with the government when he pleaded builty in October.
Arabov, whose clients include Elton John and many hip hop stars, was indicted in Detroit in 2005 for allegedly helping the “Black Mafia Family” and its principals, former Detroiters Demetrius and Terry Flenory, launder $270 million in drug proceeds.
His plea agreement doesn’t require him to cooperate against other defendants in the case, but he agreed to forfeit $2 million to the government.
