I think the majority of the artists in here can produce better shit
than what they're doin'. I wouldn't even post up 90% of the samples they've thrown together and have on thier website.

They just milk the market of those who want that cheesey PnP look.
Make money, Yeah
Make masterpieces, No

i understand what you are saying...but at the end of the day ITS WHAT THE CLIENT WANTS...

i get calls for "i want my cover to be me w/ a tight car and the title in diamonds"

when the rent and the car note is due...you suck it up and do work over art...

@tosin - I may be a designer, but that service goes hand in hand with counsultant. I take my clients success personal, when they win, I win. Most rappers have no idea whats best for their image in the commercial market, they might be gangstas on the streets, but labels, distributors and retailers dont want to deal with gangsters. And consumers are steering away from that cliche' image these days, they want something new, some one who has more than a pair of fake rims on there cover.

Dont rationalize shitty artwork with excuses of money.

UP, That's what I was gonna say . . .

That's when I feel inclined to tell them why they "Don't" want to do that and fortunately enough
I have the luxury of telling them they need to get at AKA studios with that mess.

But aside from that . . . corney covers or not, they still could be done so much better!

"corney covers or not, they still could be done so much better!" >> no doubt pimpin. you already know.

these dudes are crazy, check this out...

Super Custom Package: all the same shit we all provide = $1,500

then another $200 to $400 to put it into the Layout templates.

I hope hes gettin his money, cant hate on him for that, but damn, his clients must be working second jobs to afford that!!

they are based in houston...one of the largest markets...

im not tryna rationalize...but i cant help but stand up a bit for a southern based company...feel me...

p&p started a trend and the customers saturated the market w/ the style...be it P or CMR...shit happened...

that is why we have other designers in the area coming w/ the "new" style like automatik, shift, sketch, slf emp and more...

alot of the cats you see on there have accts or had accts w/ p&p and they would rather work w. folks they know...

but i completely understand what yall are saying...

there are times when i have to tell a client that im not going to do something for their site or design...ie counters on webpages (just fucking tacky & inaccurate)...

Pnp is pioneers in this design game. They influenced many of us designers today. When you get famous for a design. Clients tend to want that. I believe if those designers can work out any design an artist imagines. I've followed their work so I know...

Like Shemp said, he has talent and want to evolve but clients usually want that classic PDG look.. They don't venture out the box with the designer...

I CAN HONESTLY SAY THEY DIDNT INFLUENCE THE UPHEAVAL...
Ditto!

When they were PnP, the original designer was on fire though, I loved that promo and cover he did for "Pootie Tang". And everything he touched was good. I don't have anything against PnP I just think the whole AKA thing is a desperate attempt to keep the
"ghetto glame" look going for quick cheap money. From looking at them though, they just aren't up to par.

Original PnP designer is probably on to bigger in better things?!?

Let me get this str8...the people who run AKA studios arent all of the original artists from Pen N Pixel? I guess thats why their look has changed so much.

1st Tosin I have to say thanks for putting me in the same catogory as automatik, shift and the others. I then would like to go on and say this: If you'll saw the demo cover I did for C-Note "Rap artist out of Houston who uses AKA for most of his artist work" about 9 or 10 months ago and saw what i do now. You'll be like WTF. I was so use to seeing that PNP look that that was the only place I knew where to start. Now its totally different I wouldn't even dare do anything like that now lol. I have learn as a artist now that you have to give the Client what they want BUT at the same time take control of your art. For example if C-Note would have said today I want throwed ass rides and my name in Diamond Text "cause thats what the media know him as" on my cover. I wouldn't do some like pen and pixel. For the simple fact I am gone give him what he wants yet at the same time take control of my image too. I would do a real nice photo with a nice ride in it "more conservative not fanatasy style with the fake buildings, cut outs, and etc". Also his in diamonds would be totally different from PNP. Hard to explain but on a different level. Now don't get me wrong that cool to us be it a time and and place for that and on a more modern cd cover its isn't it.

Just a thought
