NEW ARBITRON PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK, August 19, 2002

Weekly "Streamies" - people who have watched or listened to streaming media online in the past week - bought more than one and a half times the number of compact discs (CDs) in the past year than the average American, according to a new study by Arbitron Inc. (NYSE:ARB) and Edison Media Research.

The study, "Internet 9: The Media and Entertainment World of Online Consumers," found that weekly Streamies bought 21 CDs in the past year, compared to the average American, who bought 13 CDs.

"While some in the record industry have viewed streaming as a threat, this research indicates that Streamies are a very lucrative group of record buyers," said Bill Rose, vice president and general manager, Arbitron Webcast Services, Arbitron Inc.

*The study also found that residential broadband adoption has doubled in just under 18 months. Those with a cable modem or DSL Internet connection at home jumped from 12 percent in January 2001 to 28 percent in July 2002.
These and other new findings from the study will be presented during a live webcast on Thursday, September 5 at 12:00 Noon EDT. Those interested in viewing the free webcast can register at www.arbitron.com or www.edisonresearch.com.

This is so important because a lot of record labels, even the indies are still not clear on what internet radio does. I often have to explain to record labels that internet radio and peer file sharing are not the same thing. Alot of folks really think that internet radio is all about downloading music, when of course its not. In hardcore rap it is very hard to get airplay unless you are on one of a very few labels that have lots of scrilla to throw at the powers that be so the majority of our artists really need to exploit ANY other method of getting their music to the audience. Internet Radio can help sell albums, I have an advisory on my website telling folks that if they hear something they like, to find it and support it. Fuck I blew 1 large in the last year keeping SacTownRadio updated!

Not to go against the grain but don't you think people who listen to streaming music are more into music anyway than people who don't? Or have more free time on their hands than the people who don't? Holla

yes your right. im sure thats true, but I think this shows that when folks listen to streaming audio online it doesnt deter them from purchasing music.

and like you said people who listen to online radio are probably more into music and are more likely to buy music, so its a good audience to promote towards.

The ability to directly reach their fan base has provided independent artists and labels with a promising promotional tool. According to e-tailers CDNow and Amazon, free streaming audio is helping to drive sales of full length CDs. In addition, creating awareness allows artists to more successfully tour and sell ancillary items...

Everyone please evangelize to your friends and neighbors and everyone you know about the benefits of Internet radio - how it IS a promotional tool to help artists and smaller labels get their music heard and purchsed. Be sure to educate anyone who will listen that it is differnet from downloading. It exposes listeners to new music and promotes sales!

Good Idea....Any promo option will help at this point.. This is not the age of distributing flyers all day to get heard, you need much more.....Internet, internat radio, forums, flyers, one sheets, promo events, etc.

Good thread though..
