You don't have to format this drive before using it.

Plug in the power
Plug in the USB
Press the power button

If it doesn't show up you don't have USB 2.0 which is required.

My computer isnt that old ive got to have usb 2.0, i have quite a few usb slots and plugged things up like ipods mp3 players through my pc so i dont see why it wouldnt work

What else could it be?? can i troubleshoot the usbs or do some type of install to get it going?

you DONT need to format, plug in wires and turn power on. it should install automatically when its first plugged in the computer. then it should show up in my computer as a drive later then the F drive. maybe refresh in my computer window. and if you want to transfer files lager then 4.27 gigs you need to format it from the fat32 which is what it is to begin with to NTFS. then you can move dvds from pc to external hard drive.

either way tho its plug and play.

smaller ones like the WD travel hard drive doesnt need power supplied to it, it just works off your computer. but i think the biggest they got that technology in is in a 120 gb.
