I'm not an artist or a label, but as a fan / promoter I personally think it's best for the artist to have a solid Facebook and BandCamp profiles for example
Agree - Thizzworld.com I don't think ever dropped but that was something that could have been big .

Thizzler on the roof - Im 32 so its not style but Im sure there doing good w/ it .

BayUndaground.com is solid as fuck ........

Facebook , siccness ( if your gonna be an adult sometimes these rapper can't take it when someone don't like there music ) ....

If I rapped or was in the bizz I'd throw some $$$ @ a proper web site / social outlet to connect & promote.

But then again I think Killa Tay does the best to connect / promote / and just have a decent conversation bout Cali Rap ..... He's down to earth & seems approachable ... I wouldn't approach some other rappers on here just cause they're too hot headed ....

A whole lot of independent rappers / labels tend to have that belief. Many don't believe in the whole @yahoo / @gmail.com thing & it's frowned upon because it looks unprofessional. I tend to believe if a major really wants you they're going to get at you off a social network if your truly making that much noise.

The whole building a website to keep it professional is more money off your budget that could go in other things or simply not putting all your eggs into one basket. With that said, the FREE social networks make that artist a bit more personal to the people who like your music.

I know the majority of people don't even visit an actual website anymore. There's no info you can't find on a social network. If a movie is coming out, or a big named artist is dropping a single the first place we hit is youtube, iTunes or facebook. Very rare if any do we visit an actual website for anything in 2011.

This doesn't mean websites which have more to offer or support the independent music scene are a waste. There are plenty of websites out there which we do need (BayUndaground.com & 408 Inc. to name a few) because they have more to offer than the, "Hey! Look at me! I look professional." type feel.

Yes.. Because you want to have all your works available (video, Free downloads, Cd sales, Merch) in 1 spot for your fans or the public to view.

Agreed, but only if your making a profit or at least breaking even and building, but if your putting money out of your own pocket just to look professional. The reality is, your only lying to yourself.

You need your own site in the long run. People want shit easy these days. If you press up fliers and have a youtube link for videos, link to itunes, link to datpiff or livemixtapes for downloads, and a link for merch on it. 9 times out of 10 they not going to fuck with all them links. If you have one website link with everything rite there they can see what you have to offer with one click.

Im a producer 1st so im lucky i have a income that comes in off of music other wise i would have been said fuck it lol, its even more harder for just a artist...thats why i try to get my hands dirty with EVERYTHING. I dont make bank but I survive and im able to reinvest back into myself... such as my website , Promo, Pictures, Videos, bills lol.

Since I have had the site I have got more traffic and business.

Thanks for breaking it down - like I said Im a fan (I don't know shit bout the rap bizz) but I wish there was more threads like this with people really doing it not being an ass ..

I got tons of questions for someone who only does this & makes a decent living . Its seems like a tough job like Devin The Dude said

Great Thread !

Yes. It gives fans, labels, etc an opportunity to browse your works exclusively. If an artist does not have a website, I think it shows their lack of overall competency from a business standpoint. Yeah, it costs a little bread, but what doesn't? Everything in this world for the most part is about false representation. In my opinion, a website can help with the overall impact an artist can have with a legitamate product. Without one, it shows the unproffesional side of most. If you cant spend $500 for a website, you shouldnt be putting out a CD/product to begin with, IMO.
