I'm thinking about getting my top 2 songs done by "Big Bass"...

... and the rest done by my homeboy (which is a cool master, but not the top). I want my top 2 songs to crack the most for my records and cd that I will be pressing up soon so that those can compete with the majors while they are getting spun. Am I way off track with this or does this sound like a good idea for someone on a tight budget??

Check this out Sick Wid It... I'm sooo confident in my music, and I truely got some hits behind me, but I can't afford to: get my whole album mastered by "Big Bass," press up records, and press up cd's. That's why I'm thinking that my top 2 or 3 singles should be mastered by him to get to "that level" (even though I'm independent), and let the rest of my album carry itself. Then I'm thinking I will put the masters he does on my album on vinyl so that I have almost perfect quality with my top songs. Do you think this is worth it??? because I can't afford getting my whole album mastered by him as well as pressing records and cd's, and the records and cd's are a must. Let me know your take on the situation. Do you see this as a waste??

Hate to bust your bubble, but it really doesn't matter for shit if you paid fucking Dr. Dre or Jesus Christ to master your album for you. Unless you're signed to a major, or unless you're an indy who's sold 100,000 copies on his own, the radio will ignore you.

I appreciate the honesty Nostril King, and I know the game is like that.. but I have friends who have hook-ups to radio (my dogg is the 21 time freestyle champ on Power 106 in LA and he said I might be able to get them to play it) as well as radio back home. I have WAYY more "in's" than your average person but I know it will still be tough to really get into any kind of solid rotation.

Even if I can't get radio though, I know a ton of dj's who already heard my stuff (and know it's hot) and will spin it... so if nothing else, I'm pressing up records to give to them so that I can be getting play in almost all the hottest clubs in Hollywood, LA, and SD..

Ya'll will hear: GRANT THEFT "Gotta Rep Tha West"

and I'm talking to a couple of my doggs on the Chargers to get them to play it before games, so it will get out there...

I just wanna know if it sounds like a waste to get my top 2-3 songs done by one of the top guys in mastering (Big Bass) and not the rest of my project??????? Is this smart or a waste of money for an independent?????

If you've got the connections to get your singles out there, by all means, have them mastered by the top guy. Just have reasonable quality on the rest of the album and you'll be straight.

@Bumpus- that's what I'm thinking too... If I've got the connects to get my music played and it's hot, it might as well be up to par quality. I appreciate the comments...

mo-x- I'm sure there are a select few places that have the same quality as Big Bass, but then you have to ask why Dr. Dre continuously goes back to him and comes out with a crackin ass album.

Also, how would anyone know ahead of time if they will get the same quality somewhere else?? and for a cheaper price??... at least with Big Bass (or almost anyone at his studio for that matter), I can pretty much guarantee that it will come out right...

I just wrote a huge response on this topic but after re-reading some of the replies, I'm just going to keep it short & simple...

Is it worth it to master 2-3 songs and leave the rest of your album as it is? No! Regardless of what you're being told, that makes your project sound unfinished and makes you look unprepared. You NEVER want to leave that impression on people.

If you can't afford to do the whole project the right way, WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN! There is no rush to put it out, especially if you don't have a huge buzz.

Another option is to go with someone who charges less for mastering. Brian is good and if he accepts your project, it will turn out nice but Brian isn't the only cat who does his job well. Take it serious enough to do a little research.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, put yourself in a situation where you have to make excuses or explain ANYTHING in regards to your music!

Sick Wid It- I feel where you're coming from. In my situation though, my other mastered songs sound good... just the radio songs (1 hitter in particular) I want to bang with the best of them because I think it has a chance to be very successful. Hopefully people with "untrained ears" won't even really be able to tell the difference between the Big Bass one and the others.. but for the "top people," and to make sure those 1 or 2 songs hit in the club with the 50 Cent's and Dre's, I feel like it can be beneficial.

Also, I do have a demand to meet at my school.. I go to SDSU with 35,000 students and a TON of people know me, know that I rap, and hear me play my stuff at parties. I need to get this out there as soon as possible and market it and have DJ's spinning it. I feel that last quote that you said, but I know the rest of my project is still good quality. Does this change any of your opinions??

Definitely DJ Mark 7- I'm at you... whenever my stuff gets pressed up in the next few weeks..

When I opened for Kurupt and Roscoe a month ago, they would not let me leave without a copy of my shit..

I'm still trying to figure out how and what I will place on vinyl.. I'm thinking:

Side A (Song #1):
1. Radio Version
2. Instrumental
3. Acapella

Side B:
1. Song #2 Radio Version
2. Song #2 Instrumental
3. Song #3 Radio Version

...this way I can include 3 songs on vinyl... but I've been thinking that if DJ's want to mix in Song #2's Acapella, they won't be able to. Does anybody have a take on this?? Also, the 1st song is a club/radio/anything banger (real versatile)... I'm trying to decide if song #2 should be more of a medium paced radio song, or a club track. Anyone holler...
