A cheap little pre-amp will give you a cheap little sound. Which ones are you looking at, I may be able to throw some shit your way that you haven't heard of but are getting good reviews.

Focusrite Platinum series ( which includes the Voicemaster Pro ) are good for the money but it's not gonna give you that PRO SOUND that everybody is after. I belive this units includes the ISA430's De-essr or some shit like that.

I'm guessing you wanna stay under a G and proably even lower but let me throw some shit at you and let you think about. If you wait a little bit save more $$$ and buy something a little bit nicer it will only benifit you in the long run.

Option 1.)Drawmer Tubestation You can get this for about $600 with out the Digital option. This one has the Digital already installed. I've heard good things about it. It is a tube unit also, but gives you control of how much tube sound you will getting via the tube/drive knob. This unit is a Mono pre-amp / vocal strip, and also is a stereo Compressor/limiter. So you can lay down your vocal tracks then, use this same unit as an Comp/Limit for your your final mix.

Option 2.)Apogee Mini Me Apogee is THEY NAME in A/D D/A converters ( will except for Prizim but they start at $8,000 for two channles ) this unit is a portable mic-pre, and A/D converter all in one. Good things have been said, but you have to dog deeper into your pocket books, and it uses a wall wart power supply ( dont ask me why ).

Ok before I go any further what is your recording medium, $$$$ you wanna pay, and what MIC are you using????????? Depending on all that, I can shoot some other options your way.

And last but not least hold off on your purchase at least one more month and here is why. In Jan of 2003, I think it's something like the 16th threw the 19th the winter NAMM show will be held. If you dont know NAMM is the biggest show ( well pretty much ) for Pro Audio / Synths etc... and this is when all the big companies come out and show off all there new gear coming out, so maybe something will be there you like even more than the Voice Master Pro.

Prices for last year's gear also tends to get big price cuts after NAMM, when all the new gear is announced, so by waiting, you probably can get some savings.

I wasn't really tryin' to pay more than 600 on an amp, thatz why I was lookin' at the Voicemaster Pro(which just came out recently)
But Right Now I'm recording to Hard Disk, Str8 Through Firewire, and am recording in 24 bit. And the MIC i'm usin' is the AKG C3000B. The reason I said I wanted to buy a lower costing' Pre is because anything can be an improvement over nothing, ya dig?
I'm not running a Profesional studio or anything, just my home setup. I think I still might hold off though(maybe), either save sum more bread, or wait til prices come down. Thanks for the advice folks

I'm actually gonna Swoop the MOTU MIDI Express XT, so thatz about 150 less.

I just have a Behringer Mixer(which I only Use to Monitor through)
You're talkin' about the Mackie Board Pre's?, my buddy has one of those
and it does sound clean. I've been usin' the MOTU 828 Mic pre's, they are clean and all, but too sterile sounding, so I'm lookin' into sum pre-amps to put sum warmth to my digital recordings

One I forgot also but just remembered is the M-Audio TAMPA this is a soild state mic pre ( and Comp/Limit ) that uses some kind of technology to mimic tube valve saturation. It does a pretty good job from what I hear and have read. It also has S/PDIF as standard. The only down side is that you have no control over how much of the tube sound it will mimic.

If anything else comes to mind I'll post it here.
