No.

You can choose to have a lot of conversations, and it helps to flesh our characters' backgrounds and the story, but if you want to, you can play through and partake in minimal conversations.

A good chunk of the game is recruiting and building your squad. Each squad member has a loyalty mission. Compared to the first Mass Effect, the sidequests are done a lot better and seem to fit in with the overall story more.

There's different classes that you can play as which change the gameplay a lot.

If you play as an Adept, you have powers like Warp, Throw, Singularity and Lift. Once you level them up a bit, you can use only the powers and might not even have the need to fire your guns.

It has a little mini game where you scan planets for minerals to upgrade your weapons, powers and the ship. It took some serious grinding when it first released, but Bioware patched it to make the scanner a bit larger and move faster.

The conversation system is done really well and is a lot more cinematic than the first game.
