he woulda always been big on the west. the shit he did on def jam wasnt what made me a fan. i wouldnt say he "blew the fuck up" though

Correct. That song is the main reason the average rap fan has any idea who he is. The reason that song got as big as it did was because of the DMX and Method Man features which probably wouldn't have happened without Def Jam. That's not to say that Jayo's not one of the dopest in the game though.

I dont think he really blew up to be on a major label. he didnt sell millions of albums or headline tours(thats blowing up) imo he was more of one of them artists that labels sign to use as a slot to drop albums until they money making franchise artists come out. he was pretty talented and good back in that 90's west coast gangsta rap era. im not sure how he sounds now.
