As far as I know he never did - he was just exposed to it.
As far as rapping about gangsta shit but not living it goes . . . when NWA came out there wasn't many people doing the hardcore gangsta shit so as a result he and the rest of NWA received a pass. Nowadays, the stakes appear to be higher.
Also (another theory), I think the Mexicans take the "studio gangsta" thing alot more seriously (as evidenced by Snapper getting chin checked by Creeper and a gang of other fools).

you don't have to be a gangbanger to be gangsta.... cube grew up in south central surrounded by Crips.... he don't bang the set but that is his influence.... he is a product of his environment... that don't make him a studio gangsta... that makes him smart for networking with damus and locs alike.....

you gotta point... i think most of these "gangsters" who rap are strictly entertainers... there are a few exceptions... tray deee defenitely has done time before upstate and liked to fuck around... we see where it got him cause hes currently upstate and wont be out until 2013. but if you truely live "the life" thats the chance you take.
YEAH IVE READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT ICE CUBE IN LOS ANGELES TIMES LAST YEAR. IT WAS IN THE CALENDAR SECTION AND THEY WERE INTERVIEWING HIM ABOUT HOW HE NOW IS A MOVIE STAR.. CUBE HIMSELF SAID IN THE ARTICLE HE WAS RAISED IN THE AREA BUT HIS PARENTS WERE ON HIM AND HE NEVER GOT INTO GANGS.. ITS A TRIP HUH WHEN WE SEE HOW "GANGSTER" THESE FOOLS COME IN THEIR MUSIC, BUT FIND OUT WHAT THE REAL DEAL IS.. THATS WHY THEY CALL IT "ENTERTAINMENT" I GUESS.
