Last week, Ice Cube angered a few West Coast newcomers after suggesting in his blog that, despite his veteran status in the game, he felt no obligations to help bring up local Los Angeles emcees.

"They ain't on my level," Cube wrote about the new generation of artists. "I don't even remember ever meeting these clowns or even being in the same room with any of 'em. They can't make a name for themselves so they need help from the O.G.'s. I refuse to throw 'em a life line. Fuck 'em. It ain't my job to make nobody famous."

The remarks prompted a Twitter response from Watts rapper Jay Rock, who said he considered himself part of the "New West" that Ice Cube seemed to be referring to. "I ain't never had a problem with Cube or none of the O.G. niggas," Rock said. "But if [he's referring to] the New West I'm a part of, he talkin [sic] bout all of us [since] he didn't say a name."

This week, likely in response to Jay Rock's Twitter comments, Ice Cube explained where his own remarks came from, and said he hasn't turned his back on young rappers, although he does have reservations about the new generation of emcees.

"Why don't I produce up and coming rappers like I used to? I got burnt out. Niggas couldn't take the baton and run wit [sic] it. I was sick of babysitting
grown ass men and walking them through the industry. I felt like Dr. Frankenstein building uncontrollable monsters. How? If you DON'T make 'em a star, they blame you. If you DO make 'em a star, they leave you. I got sick of that ungrateful shit."

Although Cube has not been specific about who he is talking about, he did say he may mention them on his upcoming album I Am The West.

"Now, a lot of people want me to name names. Buy the record. In stores
July 13th. I ain't naming names at this time, but I'm adding names. You let me know if you wanna be on the list."

real chop from da cube nigga...his status is too high too b fuckin wit sum small frys..

the point is, that big homie started out as an upstart. he's always been hard headed, proud, loud. he shouldnt expect anything less from current cali artists. getting frustrated about it is just gonna put a little mud on your name. not like he's not used to it, really.. making slapstick family comedies isnt the most og gangsta shit there is to do.

he's always part of the game, but even though he's dropping albums now and again, he's not really in the game. not anymore. same with rakim. i enjoyed the seventh seal and i highly respect dude, but dude is not in the game. i care about what he's done, godfather to the internal rhyme and all of that, but i heed his opinion as much i heed krs1's, which errs to the side of not at all.

this game suffers those who are not hungry enough to suffer for it. cube hasnt been hungry since natural born killaz. and lyod banks is dangerously close to being out entirely if he doesnt start putting in work. killay tay, jay rock, luni.. there are cats who are making moves and doing real things. i imagine it's much easier to blog from your computer while sitting in your mansion than it is to hustle like youre broke. but, he's fooling himself if he thinks fans and artists gravitate with a whole lotta care toward his blogs haha

I don't know why you niggas hatin on cube, doesn't matter if he's not as relevant in theamerican rap scene as he was, he still a name and still bringing an audience way bigger than the new west. You want him to sit back while some new booties diss him? Ice Cube did alot for rap and the coast, while niggas now wanna sound like the east coast or the south, Cube NWA and them was like fuck that this is the west, when Jerry and Eazy was tryna fuck him he left, got up on his own, did socially thretening raps, got himself into films when rappers in big budget hollywood films wasn't the thing, fought for the coast with WSC, went into record companies wit bats and shit to get his, etc. He can say whatever the fuck he wants.
