You don't need to know much about music theory to make beats, but it sure does help a lot and will allow you to make much more emotional music. Basically, I think a decent begininer setup if you're a computer orientated guy would be Cubase as a sequencer with vsti instrument plugins as your synths. That setup would be pretty easy to figure out, but very powerful as well. If you go that route, you'll want a midi keyboard to hook up, and just about any will do, which you can get for about $100.

If you want a hardware unit, you can get one of the new Emu Proteus Keyboards for cheap now as an all in one workstation, which would be good to start with.

Go read as much as you can and learn atleast the basics about equipment before you even plan on purchasing anything. If you know people that produce, ask them to help you get a setup and work off eachother. But its not an easy road, and production especially is a tough one, you gotta have some good ears for good music....So if you aiun't got the time and devotion to actually learn about what you are doing ... then don't even bother. But if you do, then follow my advice, learn as much as you CAN!

Thats not very motivational considering the guy is 17. ...
I know......but "making beats" is becoming the 90's - 2K version of "I wanna play the guitar and be a rock star" from the 70's & 80's. The business is already over saturated with bullshit from a million cats that don't have a fuckin' clue what they are doing when it comes to making music. They have no musical talent.....are tone deaf....and have never had any sort of music theory instruction. But they want to make music? As a hobby? Maybe. As a career? Good luck.

It's a fact that MOST (there are always exceptions to the rule) people that are great musicians and create masterpieces have been into music damn near their whole life. We have an understanding that most people don't have.

Bottom line - DON'T GET INTO MUSIC BECAUSE YOU THINK IT WOULD BE COOL. Do it because you love it......do it because you're passionate about it. Don't do it because you woke up one morning and decided that Dr. Dre has a cool job and think to yourself "How hard can it be?"

I'm here to present reality.....no matter how harsh it may be. Being ARTISTIC is a god-given talent.......you're not gonna find it on your PC. I've been in music in one form or another since I was 9 years old......I didn't wake up one day and decide to do it. Neither did any of the greatest........we were born with it.

But yeah......good luck on "learning to make beats."

I feel you, and thats real, because everything you just said is true, you can't jump into a moving train and not get taken down. You must be prepared and must know the consequences.

I've allways had the passion and I have allways been involved with it, its part of me and it makes me feel good when I create something to call my own, and not just with music but with everything related to art, and Im sure allot of artists feel the exact same way.

But your right, you must have a meaning to do it. Its not like Dre walked into a keyboard and started making hits one day. But some people just want to make music, no matter if its wack or whatever, but if your serious then be serious and act serious and take serious steps and precautions. You don't go into a battle without artillery or backup, So make sure you have a backup..

That's probably the best advice you will get Young Wino , if you have a passion and love for music and art, then by all means go for it, but know what your getting yourself into, and if it doesn't work out, then make sure you have something to fall back on. But I guess if you just wanna fuck around for a hobbie instead of smoking weed and watching tv all day, then go for it.
